Took the 1951 Savage M99EG to the range Saturday to see how it shoots and get it sighted in. Accuracy with Remington and Winchester 150s was ok, but nothing to write home about. Then I tried Federal 180s and shot back to back 4-shot groups each inside an inch! Now this was only at 50 yards, but open sights are getting REALLY hard for me to use. I need to mount a good aperture sight. With that I could come close to that same performance at 100 yards. I'm going to work up Mule Deer's 165/RL15 load this summer. Good stuff.

Am guessing this is a .300?
One of my 99's in .300 would shoot well under an inch with the 180 Federal load at 100 yards, with a low-power scope. Would have to look up my records to determine the exact scope, but it certainly wasn't over 4x.

They were not luxury items, in their day, but they were very well made, of forged steel, walnut, and brass. They usually had very good barrels, and a good barrel heals many sins...

I would love to see what this rifle can do with a 4x scope, but it is not drilled and tapped and I don't want to do it. A good aperture sight will serve me well.

Yeah, it should shoot minute of deer without a scope!

If you want to know what a 99 will really do, try a Bushnell LRHS. Just get yourself a peep of one kind and see what happens.

There are two scope mounting options for a 99 without having to drill and tap - the Lightfoot mount and the Stith mount. Both utilize the rear dovetail and the tang screws. The Stith is a "vintage" mount that was made for specific "vintage" scopes. The Lightfoot can be used with conventional, modern rings to mount a modern scope. pic 1 is the lightfoot, pic 2 is a Stith.

Had a '59 EG .308. Consistent 1" or smaller 3 shot groups at 100. Pretty much 1 holers at 50. Heated up quickly, not a real issue in a deer hunting rifle. 3x9 Leupie. Gave it to my son. Hope he kills stuff with it. Winchester ammo was awful, Remington pretty good, but Federal Premium was REALLY good.

I think it's a Redfield. I will check and report back.

Expat, I've got several 99's in 300 that LOVE heavy bullets and are iffy with 150's. My 1945 99EG is the most serious about being picky. But I hunt a 150 yard area, so 180's are just fine. Deer die very, very well to that EG and moa groups are more common than not. 180gr Partitions. Love them.

I purchased a 99R in .300 here from Fireball2 this past summer as a gift for my dad. He mounted a El Paso Weaver 4x and this is first group he shot at 100 yards with factory 150 Corelokts. This 99 is super accurate.

I've had several model 99's over the years in various letter designations and calibers. Most were as accurate as an average bolt action rifle.
One in particular a 99A in 243 would consistently shoot 3/8"-1/2" 3 shot groups with handloads.

Ex Pat -
I've had at least 3-4 - 99s altho newer vintage. I had a 99 358 with the brass rotor- cartridge counter & cocking indicator.
And at least 2-3, 243s. All were scoped with reasonable scopes and shot EXTREMELY well. I'm NOT surprised at their accuracy.
