Well, I'm now looking at getting a 416 Remington or Rigby.

The two rifles I'm looking at are the CZ 416 rigby ($1,151) and the winchester 416 remington ($1,250)

So basically $100 difference. I've owned and worked over the CZ's to make them slick and I've owned the model 70's.

I'm having a hell of a time deciding which way I want to go.
I don't plan on hot rodding the 416 rigby and sticking with standard velocities.

The CZ I'd have to order on line and my local store has the winchester. If I remember right, the CZ felt like a little less recoil and I couldn't remember which was more accurate.

I would go with the Rigby, but then I am an old fart who likes classic rifles and cartridges. (That's also the reason that I am having a .404 Jeffery built.)

Model 70 if it is a nice super express with CRF.

Buy both.

I like the winchesters and it's in the store, but I also like the rigby better because its so low pressure and more powders can be used to achieve standard velocity without having to worry about bullet length taking up case volume and trying to really push the limit to get that 2400 fps standard.

But remington ammo and cases are cheaper.

I like the 416 rigby as a classic caliber. And, for some reason the remington seems not to have caught on like it should, while the very similar 458 lott is kicking butt. The two 416 should work about the same.

I have a couple new haven built Model 70's and they were both very good guns right out of the box. The new 70's from N Carolina/Portugal are supposed to be even better.

I have three different types of CZ550 magnums. I got a wonderful gun from the custom shop in St Louis that is as good or probably better than either Winchester. It cost double too. I have an AHR upgraded 550, that is best of the five, bet your life on it. Literally. Finally I have a basic cz550, from cz republic with a few issues. I do not trust the feeding. Worse of the five.

YMMV.

If it was me, and I had the $$$, I would get a CZ550 in Rigby with a basic once over by AHR. Or order a gun from St Louis. If going the St Louis route, then you can also get a bolt safety, barrel length and contour to your choice, stock upgrade if desired and it should function reliably.

I like the Model 70 rifle very much, but I dont like the 416 rem. I dont care much for the 458 win either, when the lott fits and not even an option?

Rigby

Rigby is a classic caliber, .416 Rem is not... and its not even a Winchester Caliber! (I'd prefer to get a M70 in a winch caliber such as .264 win mag, .300 win Mag, .338 Win mag, .458 Win Mag, .270, .243, .270... ).

I'd vote for the CZ Rigby.

mine is fun, but the bolt binds some times. you said: " I've owned and worked over the CZ's to make them slick" what does that entail.

Detentioning and reshaping the extractor, polishing the rails, polishing and reshaping the feed ramp, polishing and shortening the extractor, polishing the bolt face and lugs, chamfering the bolt face edges ever so slightly, working the bolt 500 times. Not all of these are nessesary, but the more you do the smoother it is. The biggest improvement alone is detentioning the extractor, followed by reshaping and polishing the extractor claw, and polishing the rails.

I would not hesitate to choose the 416Rem! If it is a NH model M70, every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

A well balanced big bore M70 that is not too heavy is a joy to handle. Along the lines of a "Shoemaker light rifle" M70 416, it is fairly light and quick handling. A well balanced M70 416 in a good handling stock results in an outstanding rifle with very manageable recoil, even when in a fairly light package. The 416Rem is a great cartridge from distance shots on medium sized game all the way up to effective stopping power on things that can hurt you. It's not a pure stopping cartridge like a 458, but it is more flexible. My opinion, it covers the same ground as the 375HH while adding more on the upper end. Loaded with a 350tsx @ 2500-2600fps is most effective. A favorite combo for me.

I never warmed up to the Rigby, and never warmed up to the 550Mag rifles. Though if running such a cartridge, that would likely be the rifle to run.

If you know me, you know this will be used for plinking and deer. I think I'm going to go with the winchester. this one happens to be in an actual store for a good price, the trigger and bolt are very very smooth.

Both actually fit me well even though they have quite different feels. I just reserved it, and bought dies.

I sold my early Dakota Rigby and tweaked a NH M70 416 Remn to replace it. I prefer the latter by a long shotand for many of the reasons mentioned by Gary above. I also own a nice old BRNO 375 H&H and still prefer the Winchester.

If that's the .416 Ed had in Arizona in February,it's very nice. Not bad to shoot either.

I prefer the 416 Rem over the Rigby. I also like the M70 over the CZ in strictly factory versions.
But, I do really like a 22" barrelled CZ 458 Lott that I have, which had been to AHR prior to my purchase of it.
I have a M70 Classic SS converted to a 416 Rem with a 22" barrel that I am fond of.
416 Cartridge wise, the 416 Ruger is my favorite, followed by the 416 Rem.

Stainless Winchester 70 .416 Remington with CRF would be the one to own.

On that basis I would take the 416 Rigby.

I have never owned a 416 Rigby but have owned both the 416 Wby and 416 Remington. Heaps more scope for playing about with the 416 Wby and Rigby would be the same.

Well, I picked up the m70. Just waiting on brass and bullets so I can go shooting. I bought a box of the new style vortex barnes solids but I'm reserving those for shooting through logs to see how far they'll penetrate.

First thing I did was polish the feed rails and magazine follower to slick up the feeding. A lot less work than on the cz. I also used jb bore polish to smooth out the bore more. Hopefully it will cut down on the fouling
