I just built an AR47 and plan to mainly shoot cheap russian factory ammo through it. I've seen some Tula and wolf loads that have hp or sp bullets but most are copper washed steel jacketed stuff. I'm assuming some of them still expand and would work ok on deer or hogs.

Do any of you have a favorite one? I'm looking for the $5/20 rounds range stuff. I've been shooting Tula 122 HP's lately and they shoot well but I'm wondering about a 125 sp or even a 154 sp.

Burley - If plinking, shoot away with the Russian stuff.

For hunting, I would either load my own, or look for a good load from Federal, or Hornady... Someone that loads a round with a true hunting bullet.

The federal blue box works very good on deer and is about as cheap as they come. I don't think your going to get a good hunting round for $5/20rnds

I'm not really looking to make it a primary hunting rifle. I was just looking for cheap plinking ammo that would work for hunting hogs or a deer in in a pinch. Just wondering if any of the copper washed steel jacketed sp's or HP's would expand and work. It's about the same price of the FMJ stuff so I was thinking why not.

When I bought my CZ carbine in 2003 I also bought 1000 rounds of Wolf steel cased 122 gr Copper Jacketed HP's for $100 at a gunshow. The boys and I have used the combo on deer, blackbuck and hogs with excellent performance. It is the only round I shoot that I do not handload for.

anyone expecting to harvest game whether by chance or on purpose ethically, IMHO, owes it to the game, to use a workable bullet. Not look for the cheapest.


Now Ed gives a good proven suggestion and thats great once you know it works.

For me, 125 ballistics work good as do the light barnes, I forget, 115 or so?

This is the truth, I don't care if it's a 200" buck or a doe (or a mouse for that matter) if you're going to kill it then you owe it to the animal to do it as quick as possible. Using the cheapest ammo is not the way to do it.

Unless the cheapest ammo works.

It's a matter of what works, not how much it costs.

I used hornady interlocks for years for almost everything. They were cheap and they worked. Then I had one not work so great and after filing it down I noticed they changed the jacket on them and I lost a little confidence and changed to something more expensive.

How many animals do you anticipate harvesting? A box of 20 rnds. of quality ammo might cost $15.00-$25.00. 20 rnds. of ammo makes a lot of bacon.
