Will be elk hunting this fall with the 264 WM. Where I'm hunting I expect the shot to be 400 yds+/- 40 or so. My rifle will fire a 140 NPT at 3120, a 140 NAB at 3200, 142 LRAB around 3100 also. Given that the velocity at 400 yd will be around 2400fps, which of the three would be the best bullet choice? At the reduced velocity, is a little softer bullet better, or am I splitting hairs at that range?

Let's assume accuracy is equal at that range.

Thanks!

Partition. I've had my best results with them.

When I ran a 264 some years ago I shot the now extinct 140 Speer Grand Slam. Killed everything I pointed it at. I think the Partition is about the same profile. It should work great for everything you need it to do.

I have shot elk with the 140 partitions from 30 yards to 700 yards and have not had a problem. in 2013 i gave the 140 accubonds a try we connected on a 6x6 at 450 yards. In 2015 with the 140 grain Accubonds we head shot our cow at 15 steps she was bedded. I shoot the Accubonds because my rifle shoots half moa groups with them. My partitions shoot one moa groups. they both have done their job well for me. I will be using the accubond this year.

NPT's and NAB's have similar terminal performance profiles. I, too, would use the one my gun liked best.

I have a .240 that prefers the 100 gr. NPT over all others, and I've tried a wide variety of different types and wts. When I find a situation like that, I'm pleased.

Go with what shoots best. NPT and NAB both kill stuff about as dead... grin

Not one of the bullets your referring to but if I draw an Elk tag this year I will be using the Barnes 127 grain LRX bullet in front of 70.1 grains of Ramshot Magnum. Velocity from my EW Model 70 is 3400 and change.

The 129gr or 140gr Hornady is also a good choice. As of recent, I much prefer a tipped bullet over the partition. The accubonds are a good bullet capable of handling a 400yd shot in a bull. Shot placement is key.

Whenever I get geared up for a longer shot I usually end up with an Elk at bow ranges. So don't discount close range performance. I think the verdict is still out on the Nosler ABLR for close in shots. I am going to try them in the 6.5 Swede first before I commit to them for anything else.

All the other suggestions should work fine near or far.
