Just wondering. I saw a couple sheds on an ATV this weekend. Anyone got anything to show off yet?

I would not mind finding this guy's headgear.

Nothing good yet.
I've been out a few times. Found an old white 5x mulie set.

I love the start of shed hunting because it marks a major change of (elk-related) seasons. That first week of April a good many of the antlers drop around here, hunting applications go in, snow melts enough to get a little higher into the foothills, and it usually marks the start of fewer weekends at the rifle range and the beginning of hiking and scouting and of the application waiting period.

On my elk hunt last year I found a fresh set with 52 inch beams that I think would have scored in the 350 neighborhood if inside/outside could have been measured.

I feel lucky to have found 3 brown elk bones this year, about 17 lbs worth. The good ole days are over...

I have another good spot to check once the river goes down. Its usually good for a few. Hopefully they were in there this spring.

Good luck to you guys!

Nice. She has a way of finding those doesn't she, I remember another big set. Heard about a large set at a local sporting goods store, gotta go check them out.

Nice! South Dakota requires a person to have an elk's license and the hunter uses his/her tag to take a shed home. P

If Weasel and Alamosa aren't raking them in either I don't feel so bad!

Really? That's pretty amazing. And baffling.

I can't explain the thoughts of politicians or appointed department heads, often close relatives of politicians. When Janklow was governor he had all state appointed positions filled in by relatives.

But here's my guess...

The GF&P dude comes around and sees you have a nice set of antlers and you say that you picked them off the ground. The GF&P's dude believes you might have poached an elk. And that may be the basis of their twisted logic.

I did a little research and could not verify that SD has such a peculiar law. Turns out that they don't

I finally talked to a guy at F&G HQ.

In SD you can pick up sheds on private land and federal land like BLM and US Forest Service land. No Problem.

You cannot collect shed antlers or any other natural artifacts on South Dakota State Park or other State lands.

You cannot pick up antlers still attached to a skull or skullplate anywhere. The hunting regulations are clear on that point as well.

So anyone found any dandy sheds yet?
