Looking to build a .280 AI on a Pre-64 I just picked up. I will go with a D'Arcy Echols McMillan in Edge fill. Will a factory featherweight contour balance properly or do I need to go to something like a #2?

Here is a few photos of a #2 in a Echols stock.

The general concensus is that the Echols stock is made for larger barrels.

I've done both a #3 and #2 in that stock and was happy with them both.

Eric, I think its a great plan - I'd short shank a #2 and go 23" and I bet you'll be really happy with it.

Pathfinder76 has done the Fwt contour in the Legend and speaks highly of it as I recall.

Thanks for the link. I love the ergos of the Echols stock...but I may need to rethink the contour or switch to a McMillan compact or maybe a featherweight.
Balance is most important to me but also want to keep it under 8lbs if possible.

You can do a FW contour in a Legend. Personally I like a #2 better but I know of some rifles with the FW contour.

I think if I were doing a 280AI ,I'd use a #2 but that's just me.

Here's a #2 Krieger in a Legend. Remember not all #2's are created equal. This rifle weighs 7.5# as you see it.

How/where does it balance, Bob?

deerhunter: Where you want it....front action screw. Gene built it. It was planned that way. smile

But I've been using Krieger #2's for 7 maggish rifles for about 25-30 years now on a slew of rifles.

They tend to come out neutral balance, between the hands when you throw it up. I don't like muzzle heavy rifles; they feel sluggish and slow.

That rifle you see behaves like on auto pilot.

Well, here's another opine.

I've had the Legend, compact edge too.
For the featherweight , I'd do the compact.
For a number 2, I'd use the Sako Classic. Has a little cast off and is a little trimmer in the forend. I believe they can inlet it for a Win.

For me, the legend is a little bulky and too much stock for the lighter calibers.

Here is a 23" #2 Krieger with what I think is a 3/4" shank (I'll measure here shortly) in an Echols Legend stock.

Beautiful rifle Bob. If I were the OP, I'd opt for a hunters compact if wanting to go with the fwt contour. The compact stock is damn near perfect with the pre 64 fwt platform. YMMV..

Correction. It is 3/8".

Weight is 7-10 and balances on the front guard screw.

Yup. That's true I think. I have a Compact Edge 270 with FW contour but my favorite all time stock for that is a Brown PoundR.

Lighter than all f them but more expensive too.

So what? smile

I just sold one that lasted over 30 years, and saw every corner of the continent on hunts.

Here's my new one. It's only a couple years old.

And yet I had one an absolutely hated it. Felt akin to picking up a Glock, something just wasn't right. Just goes to show there's a seat for every ass.

The drop at heel is a little more than some people like, which has been mentioned here before.

I guess I have a long face and have pulled off a miracle shot or two with mine but that drop bugs some people.
