I know that the areas these tags are for generally are mostly private land so my question is how much does it cost to get access on the private land? Seems the areas are mostly around Pueblo and northwest of there.

It's pretty damn tough. Not impossible but don't expect much from a public Internet message board. When a guy finds a place he's normally tight lipped and if he's not he ought to be

I guess I could call the chamber of commerce of local towns to get some phone numbers.

No doubt, getting a person on the phone at the city offices is a tough job in itself! Sure for $2000. plus you can easily get to use private property in the area. Costs more for an week or two hunt than a years lease in Texas.

If you're thinking it'll be less once you factor in non resident tag fees, gas, food and trespass fees I think you'll be disappointed. It's not cheap for the good stuff.
If I were you I'd draw a mule deer tag and hunt one of the 23,000,000 acres of public ground here in the state.

Most of the farmers down in the valley (arkansas valley - pueblo, through la junta) are leasing their lands. But you will be hard pressed to find any that aren't in multi-year deals.
It's expensive for good access along the river. Usually the lease is combo for ducks/geese/turkeys and deer. I can't comment on the cost per acre but $2,000 for a small lease is on the low side for marginal access.
If you have money the leases are game rich, and so is the cost.
There are zero to no farmers down there who give strangers free access. Those days are long gone. I wish you well in your quest, but huntsonora's suggestion of going for mule deer on public land is a much better idea.

Agriculture is a business with a lot of uncontrollable risk involved, so a farmer/rancher has got to get the maximum out of every potential revenue stream. If they can make a few extra $$ through trespassing fees, well, good for them.

Well I looked into it and a simple access lease for what I wanted rivals some of the all year leases in Texas. So I decided to get a over the counter elk tag. Much public land and few issues.
