These are a good idea as well, great for those exhausting hunts.

ALWAYS treat a firearm as if it were loaded

NEVER point a firearm at something you do not wish to destroy

That is my point. Surprised anybody would refute it.

Ever spent much time around a busy skeet field, down is about the safest place to point that barrel

I haven't used them, but can't see their fault. No way I would use it on any other kind of situation or gun setup.

THIS ^^^^

I don't use one but saw at least 10-15 last night at the trap club.

I don't do the bunch of guys shooting/hunting thing. I go alone. Suppose I'm the goofy one here, but I just can't bring myself to think it's ok. 57 years of trying not to shoot myself, I guess. Your mileage may vary ...

Not stupid at all when used as designed for breeched O/U shotguns on the skeet/trap/sporting clays ranges.

No more unsafe then resting a 2x4, broom handle or piece of pipe on your toe.

Always cold ranges until your turn to load and shoot.

Y'all are getting a little sissified over it I think.

worried about a device thats intended for an unloaded gun, but not worried about looking down a barrel to check, cleaning a barrel, and so on....

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense....

Great talking points but NONE OF US FOLLOW THESE "RULES" because it's impossible. A gun is always pointed at something. The guns in my safe are pointed at my safe and also at my cieling, I don't want to destroy my safe or my ceiling! My safe is in the basement below my bedroom, sometimes I go down and look at my guns when my girlfriend is sleeping, I don't want to destroy her! Some people are just overly picky.

Keeping the barrel pointed down isn't the problem. I do that without sweeping myself or others. Perhaps in some circles, it's Continental and suave to rest the muzzle on your toes, but it's still a clear violation of safety.

One thing you're forgetting about looking down a barrel when cleaning- I'm not standing around with live ammo waiting to shoot another round.

Recognizing that pointing a firearm at yourself violates safety isn't sissification. It's prudent. Giving in to the social pressure that a safety violation is acceptable because of whatever reason they justify it with, is being a sissy

It is not dangerous, as the gun is empty. I just think it's bad protocol. Say what you will.

Yep. I did it for years but you made me think about it and I changed my mind. Have no carried a round in the chamber while hunting since.

Gotta do it your way all the time, right smartass? Hardly got my head handed to me, as there were comments from both sides. Apparently this is an accepted practice in competition circles, something I am not familiar with. I still disagree with it. I still think it's not a good idea. Go bother somebody else. Pretty sure you bother a lot of people a lot of the time.

Nope, but having seen the terrain, I would not chamber a round in that situation. Most of my small game hunting requires you to be ready for a snap shot. Big game, for me anyways, does not most of the time.
