I do ok picking trucks and equipment and running a business, but something goes off the rails with gunsmiths. I need to figure out the different set of rules for dealing with gunsmiths.

2 days really means several months.

2 weeks really means several months.

No big deal really means I have no idea what a Savage 99 is.

If I can't figure it out I have a gunsmithing buddy that's really good with 99's really means I have no friggen idea, and I'll probably wet myself once the gun is in my possession.

Friggen gunsmiths...

How hard can it be to screw a factory barrel on? It's not rocket surgery.

up here in the cold forbidding north we have a custom gun maker that does that sort of stuff ..try finding a custom builder with his own machine shop...... most any machineist worth his salt should be able to figure it out.

Gunsmiths are like hookers. If you want a good one it's gonna cost you.

I picked a part-timer who builds and shoots benchrest centerfires. His whole focus is accuracy, when shooting, when running a mill, when scheduling his time.

He'd never worked on a 99 and told me so. I didn't need him to learn the idiosyncrasies of the 99 I just needed him to thread and chamber a barrel. I could fiddle with the feed and trigger issues.

"I'd be happy to tackle another 99, now that I have a jig for those darn extractor cuts. These things are a devil to headspace though, each time I closed the lever I'd get different readings to the bolt face...off maybe 3 to 4 ten thousandths"

works for me

I found the cartridge guide on the top of the bolt to be the trouble.
