There was a guy on another board who was familiar with the zoo who said that the kid must have been very determined to get in there and had to go through, around, and over something like three different barriers.

This is also correct.

That was my first thought upon hearing about this. What kind of a piss-poor excuse for a barrier was that which would allow a little kid to get in there?

Barriers probably erected for children of a reasoning age.

Little children would be watched after by their parents.

Parents screwed up and altered the calculus of what they prepared for by being so incompetent.

The zoo had 3 barriers that were effective for something like 38 years and millions upon millions of visitors. However if even one kid can figure a way around it the barrier needs to be improved. The zoo acted correctly in my opinion, the parents not so much.

And a simple plexiglass barrier 4 feet tall would have prevented this entire thing,

Sometimes we forget just how quickly a small child can dissapeared from our vision, especially if you are also supervising other young children (I'm not sure if there was any other kids, but it bears consideration )

Another woman tried for several minutes to stop the kid from going over the fence and to come back inside the railing while his negligent mom was completely oblivious.

This is the kind of kid who runs around raising holy hell in a public space while his otherwise oblivious parents occasionally look in his direction with an admiring smile.

Definitely agree...as it stands the parents should be liable for expenses occurred.

I'd bet a paycheck those parents couldn't afford their tickets to the zoo with out government help.

They say everything happens for a reason.
For me that reason is usually because I've made some bad decisions that I need to pay for.

Yep, better get the govt involved here. Personal responsibility and basic parenting skills are way overrated.

People don't want to see fences and plexiglass barriers and modern zoos are designed to limit the amount of unsightly physical barriers

A buddy of mine thinks the kid mistook the gorilla for his uncle.

From the looks of it, the gorilla probably didn't outweigh the kid's mom but by about fifty pounds.
