We got the shaft for 7/8. Can't believe it...they always had leftovers before. WTH?

Now I have to find a plan B.

Smokepole,

I would look in the oakbrush and creek bottoms around 7500-8000'
It kind of depends on how much frost they have had, I think they'll be close to green stuff or leftover acorns.

I was poking around the CPW website for bear data in 61 last year and found a map of the bear harvests.
The kill locations were widely distributed. It was hard to get too far from a place where a bear had not been taken.
I recall there were a couple of pockets in the SW part of the unit where there was thicker concentrations of bear kills.

Thanks Al, I didn't know they posted that kind of data for bears.

Drew my 1st rifle is a week later this year, and a full moon. Might be more challenging.

I have been doing the same thing for about 10 years now. Drew a cow tag first rifle 23/24 and bought an OTC either sex archery tag for 421.

Two elk tags for $100 isn't a bad deal, I don't see how you foreigners do it for $400 to $600 but there seems to be a lot of you up there in October. πŸ˜€

I drew a 25 archery non-resident mule deer tag, but may return it as I don't think that is the area we will be hunting OTC archery elk in now. First trip out.

And to think......I used to draw GMU 61 with 1-2 PP's for rifle, and 0-1 PP's for archery..........

Was that a 1st choice?

I live in 7/8. I have elk and deer that I could literally jump on their backs from my deck. No tags for 2 years.

My buddy and I drew Unit 54 Cow tags. It'll be our first time elk hunting too. Heard it's rough country but we're looking forward to heading into West Elk Wilderness area, maybe up the West Elk Creek Gorge. Any tips would be much appreciated.

FYI – CO is having issues getting their tags out. I got drawn for a cow tag (1st choice) and received a refund check for my second choice (bull) but no tag. I confirmed my drawn result online and finally called yesterday. The girl at DNR confirmed they were having some tag processing issues and my tag should be received by the end of the month – something to do with lost mail claims and reissue of lost license ????

Just FYI for those anxiously checking their post boxes like I have been.
