my 30/06 has taken at least 1000 ( a thousand) animals in Africa over the last 20 plus years for myself, friends, culling and clients

I've killed giraffe, hippo, our clients have killed eland and roan. The two biggest species of antelope.

Ammo is easy, and it works with perfection.

Got a pre 64 M70 FW that is very nice. Have only shot it a little and it's not scoped right now, but already did the loads......59 H4350-165 Bitterroots.

I may drop it in an Echols stock. Getting ready is half the fun!

No Mashburn? I used a 30-06 with 180 Partitions in Limpopo and didn't recover a single bullet, including on some big animals. It worked great. Ranges there were less than 150 yards. If you like the rifle take the '06.

I am hunting Namibia this year and debating between taking a really clean FN Mauser .30-06 stocked by my dad or a Remington Classic 7mm Rem. The FN is the nicer of the two, but gets 1.5-2.0 MOA accuracy. The 7 is proving to be pretty much a one-hole rifle with most loads.

Great trip, Bob.. I took my .300 both times, my pal took a 7mm-300 Wea., next trip a .338.. We never had any long range shots that couldn't be made with an 06..Much of SA was very thick brush.. I shot 200 grain Part.both trips..
It was wonderful over in SA.. I briefly considered moving there after I retired, but Mandela took over so that ended any plans I had for that.. The only down side to that trip is the long plane ride.. If it were not for that, I would go a couple more times.. Enjoy!!!!

If you decide .300 Mag, Weatherby all the way. If you run out of ammo, you can fire form .300 H&H into .300 Weatherby or fire form .300 Win into .300 BobinNH, your new short-necked .300 Weatherby wildcat.

DMD: If I had head stamped brass I'd take the Mashburn for sure. I don't mind staying stateside and flying with a wildcat but am a bit spooked going over seas with it.

I considered a 300 magnum but know I'm all set with the 30/06.

Bob, there is certainly nothing wrong with the 30-06 on plains game but even if only for that category you might consider the 375 H&H, not because you need it, but because it just "says Africa" to us here on this side of the pond. And really, it never does seem too much over there, even for plains game.

And then if you would include buff you're all set.

I took a Blaser with scoped '06 and 375 barrels to Namibia and intended to use both. I started with the 375 because I'd never hunted with it much before, intending to switch off to the thirty some time midstream.

I found the 375 so well balanced, so sure, so pleasing that I never changed over; it was fun. I found the 270-gr TSX over H4350 to 2675 fps to work exceedingly well from near to 250 yards, my longest shot.

Just my two cents and no need at all to change from the "old thirty" if you're set on that but if not....
