First off, I don't own a Ford truck, nor do I own a Chevy- I came across this video on You Tube, and found it interesting. Are the Ford aluminum beds really this weak and flimsy? Wonder if their new 2017 aluminum F250 Super Duty trucks will also have aluminum beds?

Does anyone intend to make real trucks anymore?

The blocks they used were chosen for their shape and weight and for the effect on the Ford bed.

If somebody loaded like that on my truck there would be a big problem. It wouldn't matter what the truck was made of.

Hopefully they worked the paint issue out on that aluminum. Friend of mine has an excursion and they have aluminum hoods and rear gates. They were repainted 2 times by the dealer before the warranty ran out and needs paint again on the back. I guess if u live in colder climates the aluminum in them starts to corrode and the paint just flakes off.

Silverado has aluminum hoods do they have paint issues? How long ago have Excursions been built? 12 years ago i think the technology would be improved.

Was at our local building supply today, and checked to see if they had any round-edged building blocks- they were fresh out. Guess the Ford aluminum guys must have bought them all up.

They did, however, have a good supply of square-edged cinder blocks in stock........

Maybe some would rather see a demonstration with construction blocks made of wood or foam? Or a lunchbox instead of a tool box. Whatever the brand name, I'd not want a pu truck bed made of aluminum.

You don't like that a - Ford - can be so easily damaged. But doesn't have to be cinder blocks, different things get dropped by mistake. Don't be so sure about all future pickups having aluminum beds like that one if it's so easy to punch holes in them. Matters not to me, I like my truck just fine and have no desire for a new one.

Chevy is about to do it as will the other manufactuers. Ford got a huge head start on them. ThisAluminum truck that is the safest by a large margin in any crash test and gets 24 mpg and will outpull about any V8 engine what is not to like? I don;'t know many people that have 50k + pickups that knowingly abuse them but I work hard for my money and some people don't know how to take care of their equipment. If I wanted a work truck I would have bought a base model XL with rubber floor mats.

I still say that there's no way that an empty tool box falling off the side rail would punch a hole in the bed unless that tool box is made of tungsten.

So the ad is a total fabrication? Good to know, as Ford can now sue the pants off of GM for that. Alert us when the lawsuit hits the courts. The box did hit at the worst possible angle, and the ad said the box was empty. I wonder what would happen if it was full of tools?

LOL when GM corporate gets their panties in a wad over a superior design and they as well as everyone else will have to go to lightwieght alloy. Have they fixed the AFM issues yet or the cheap plastic mix doors in the AC that strip their plastic gears yet?

According to US News ratings GM is now 3 and 4 behind Dodge at #2.

I'm not trying to turn it into a GM vs ford thing, like some are. I'm just asking if you think the ad is fake? If so, Ford has a case. Kind of like when the news media has to use a model rocket motor to get a 73-88 gm to burst into flames with a side impact. Fake.

FWIW, I think aluminum will become more common in all auto panels as time goes on. I bet they ALL end up doing it. Trimming off over 500 pounds of weight from the truck increases its cargo and tow capacity and it gets better mileage. Plus no rust. Of course, if a tool box dropping from the bed rail can puncture it, there may be a bit more engineering needed for trucks that actually get used.

So, is it fake?

The ad isn't fake, it's just carefully engineered. I'm confident that if they wanted Ford could engineer a test to show just how deficient the GM is with respect to some specific design feature. It's no different than the video Ford put out years ago on the Tundra's bed (youtube Toyota Tundra bed bounce)

When all is said and done, most trucks on the market today are really nothing more than urban/suburban grocery haulers and status symbols- most of the people buying them will never use them to do real work, and could care less if the beds, bodies, and frames are made of steel, aluminum, or swiss cheese.

You gotta admit, tho, the constant back and forth between Ford, GM, and Ram owners is nothing if not entertaining........

Yeah...IF the tool box was as represented.

The weight saving should translate into additional fuel economy. Don't know if that's true though.

I'd get a bed liner if it was me.

If I was stupid enough to use a front end loader to dump blocks into my 2500HD, I think I'd throw a sheet of 3/4" ply in the back first.

Wasn't too long ago that Ford was touting that their F-150 was 500 pounds heavier than any other 1/2 ton out there (including the 3/4 tonnish, 1/2 ton Toyota Tundra) making it more heavy duty than the others. My how times change. Now they are reducing weight and going to pissant small block engines.

Like others have said here, 1/2 ton trucks ain't "truck trucks".

So very true. Most of the people who own pickups in my area would be better served by minivans. One of my best friends bought a Ram pickup a couple of years ago. Its as quiet and smooth as any vehicle I have ever ridden in and has as many bells and whistles as a Cadillac......but the bed and trailer hitch are still virgins.

My 2014 Ram 2500 Diesel has a pretty neat feature. It records miles driven with a trailer attached. I don't pull very heavy, 10 000lb or less, but in 58k miles, I've logged over 12k miles pulling. Probably a little more than the average grocery getter, but there's more than a few out there that don't go anywhere without a trailer.

I have one as well. '14 4x4 ram, 8-speed, 5.7. 19 on the hwy, 16 in town. After 68K miles. I will say, other than the recalls, I've not had an issue with anything on the truck. There are some things that are annoying, some to the point that I may not get another, but the price was a lot less than the Ford that I wanted, and it has more options.

I have an '08 Ram 2500 with the Cummins. I have the manual tranny. I didn't know about it when we bought it but the stock clutches start slipping at 60 to 80k. Other than that, it's been flawless. It'll turn over 100k on a trip this weekend.

The big weekness with the rams is the front ends. I had the passenger side hub bearing go out and very nearly avoided becoming a three wheeler on the freeway.

~100k on the odo is about the time an infusion of cash will be needed to attend to the front end.

My auto transmission has been solid for 150k miles. Water pump crapped out at 50k, and had a fuel injector line crack around 90k. All in all a good truck, but like anything mechanical, stuff will break and require an infusion of cash.

Chevy dodge ford toyota nissan i dont give a $hit, if the motor starts when you turn the key and it does so on a regular basis im happy. Its better than walking although i had a dodge dakota when i was young and broke that made me take the shoe leather express a few times. Sold it for 500 bucks. Pos, but i have friends that have tbe dodge diesels and they seem to be good trucks.

Ironically enough, 100K is when my bumper to bumper is up.... smile

A friend told me last week that he knew someone in the video production that produced it . They told him it took like 38 tries to get it to punch through. Expensive commercial.

We put so much salt on the roads most people would love to have an aluminum truck.

Brand loyalty confuses me. You are paying for the truck. I don't see guys running around saying how bad ass Gap jeans are. If they gave you the truck I would understand. Buy what works for you. If it does, great. If it doesn't, then get something else down the road.

My next truck will be a diesel. Not because I tow a damn thing but because I was in a gasoline explosion and the smell of gas fumes makes me dry heave.
