Home Forums Hunting & Shooting Winchester Collectors Just picked up a winchester model 70 and looking for some info

walked in a gunshop yesterday and saw a winchester Model 70 30-06 that seemed like a good deal, so just had to have it.. serial # is 7xxx which i guess puts its manufacture in the late 30's. i believe it has been re stocked and possible rebarreled-as the barrel has a band for sling swivel and there is no markings on the barrel denoting caliber or sights.. gun has a one piece redfield base.. it has the 3 position safety and smooth as silk action.. bore is mirror bright and there is some bluing loss near the muzzle and on top if barrel. i know next to nothing about theses old winchesters and looking for info on it and possibly a value

With that serial number it means that pretty much everything has been "messed" with on that rifle. The safety isn't original, the rear bridge has been drilled and tapped, the barrel has been replaced and the stock is after market. It has no collectors value the way it sits and it's value is purely as a shooter but being that it's still a P64 M70 it still retains some value as a shooter. Without being able to handle it I'd say it's worth $500-$600.

One thing about it, you have a dang good rifle right there. Excellent for hunting and shooting with. Reelman is about spot on for value. I'd say around $600.00 as is, without the nice Leupold scope. I'd hunt the heck out of that one with a smile. By the way, when you wear the barrel out I'd think about turning that one into a 9.3x62mm.

Have you pulled the action off the stock? Might find barrel markings at the 6 o'clock position, that's always where I have mine placed.

ETA: If the shop tagged it 30-06 but it's not marked as such on the barrel, you might want to have it checked before firing to make sure it's not something else and the shop just took a guess based on bore diameter.

Exactly. There is a thread on the hunting rifle forum where a guy fired a 30-06 through what I believe to be a 308 Norma magnum. He got lucky and there was no damage to himself or the old rifle, but it could have been different if that case would have ruptured.

Did it come with that scope? If so, your deal might even turn out to be better than you thought if you dont know the value of that scope. In short, it is a good one.

You have a great hunting rifle. Pre-wars are my favorites. I have one that came with that same safety. It isn't a Tilden safety so I believe it could be a Pachmayr. I changed my rifle back to the original type safety. It was a good learning experience for me. Good Hunting.

I'd have jumped on that one too. If I had a pristine and original pre-war 70 I don't think I'd hunt it and enjoy it to the max. Hope it shoots *lights out!*

I think that $500 to $600 value is about right for this rifle. There is not much "original" about it, but, if it is a pre-war '06 action, it should be worth that much.
