Just picked up a new to me Remington 700 chambered for 300 Savage. I'm going to load for it and need some help. I know this cartridge, like many of the older cartridges, is loaded down considerably, especially considering the rifles it has been chambered in. I'd like to load it to modern pressures, and would appreciate any help with load data for strong modern actions.

You can max pressure it all you want and it still won't be a 308 Win.! Just load a sane, accurate 150 or 165 gr. bullet and be happy

I like H4895 and 130gr Barnes TTSX. Start at 42grs and stop when you start tickling 3,000fps

Not looking to make it a "308"… I have one of those… and a couple 30-06's, and 300 Win's. Just why shoot anemic loads when the rifle can handle modern pressures?

Thanks Steelhead. I was kind of figuring the 130's would top around 3,000 or so. I appreciate the starting point.

I have a 700 Classic in the little 300. When I was first learning my way around the cartridge I shot listed data and most was pretty anemic. The firing pin strike would dish in the face of the primer and the pressure of firing hardly ironed them back out.

If you have some RL15 you can get right up on 2700 fps with a 150 no problem. Mine likes 44 grains, very accurate.

Thanks Mathman. I figured as much, but having some actual data is extremely helpful. I don't have any RL-15, but I'm on the lookout for some. I have a butt load of 17, but not 15. I hope to rectify that soon.

You can pretty much do the same thing with Varget or N140.

Plenty of Varget on hand, so that's where I'll start.

Have you messed with 125-130's at all?

Not enough to suggest anything other than what Steelhead already mentioned.

I haven't used my 700 .300 Sav. much.. 2 hogs and one antelope.. All factory stuff. In addition I have shot mule deer and antelope with a 99 in that caliber.. When I reload for it I will probably go with 150 gr. WW Silvertips and either H4895 or 3031.. I have about 500 of these old bullets and they look so neat in the Savage case.. Remind's me of days gone past..

I agree on the looks of the little rounds. The sharp shoulder on the short body makes them look very business like!
