Has any of this data been pressure tested?

Brother Steve,

Could you give more details on the 7SGLC? My memory is failing me right now....

I have a 7x57AI with a very similar case shape and only a slightly larger case capacity. I get 3050fps w/56.5gr of RL19 and a 140gr ballistic tip and 2950fps w/55.0gr of the same and a 150gr ballistic tip. 2900 w/the right powder should be very doable in the '08AI. powdr

I believe a 280 has more capacity than a 7-57 Imp and it will barely get those speeds in a 22" barrel.

Am I wrong on the capacity?

Unless you want an AI....

There's a constant drum beat on these forums that AI chambers aren't worth the trouble. If you are talking about AI'ing a factory barrel, I agree - the gunsmithing bill won't be worth the added benefits. But if you're talking about cutting a chamber in a virgin blank, an AI chamber can be cut for the same price as a standard chamber.

It's only 50-75fps more velocity for an AI over a standard, but more is reliably still more. Not having to trim brass anymore is a nice added bonus. Factory ammunition shoots just fine in an AI barrel (my fireform loads are very accurate). W/ a hand lapped custom tube and a tight chamber you will get about the same velocities as a factory tube in a standard chambering - my 7mm-08AI w/ Hart 23" barrel routinely shoots a little faster w/ factory fodder than published velocity.

Really the only down side is fireforming the brass. If you're the kind of person that puts at least 100rounds down range in the off season, it's a non issue. I doubt I will ever chamber a custom tube in a standard chamber for a bolt rifle again.

For whatever reason, I've always detested the "08" nomenclature. Soooo, I did what Layne Simpson did and named the round kinda after myself grin

My 7X308 Ackley barrel is engraved 7SGLC ... 7Steve's Good Little Cartridge.

Blessings,

Steve

I agree with the above post. Although the barrel for the 7-08ai I have now came from a factory Rem Alaskan Ti 7-08. I like the 50-75 fps, and hardly ever trimming.

IF one can get those listed velocities with Reloader-16 in a stock 7-08, add another 50 fps with an AI and it supports a very nice lightweight, compact hunting rifle.

My wife used a 7mm-08AI to take a 7x8 NM bull last fall right at 400 yds. She was using a 120 gr TTSX with a MV around 3120 fps. Very easily obtainable with a standard 7-08. Admittedly, IMO at least, this was close to as far as I would want to try that particular combination. But the bullet did exit and the elk walked about 30 yards uphill and went down. She did put one finishing shot in him when she and her guide got to the bull, but he wasn't going anywhere.
