I recently received a wildebeest skull and naturally there are strange horns attached. Like nothing anyone has seen around here, so...
I went to the only store in town and showed the morning crowd (1/2 doz. old men sitting on milk crates and a bench) the skull. Told them I found it up in the bottom and asked what kind it was. No one had a clue, but there were plenty of guesses. I set back and let them have at it. Someone said that a fellow had a cow that had horns similar to that and maybe the cow had died, but somebody pointed out the horns weren't hollow, so that theory got squashed. One or two said they had no idea what it came from. One of the fellows believes in aliens and I laughingly suggested that it might be some sort of cow mutation, caused by aliens. Well, that got him started and for the next 10 min. or so, we got a lesson on aliens. One fellow took a pic with his phone to show his nephew, who is a game warden.
The conversation drifted off onto other important subjects, so I took the skull and went on home. I figure by tomorrow (next day at the latest), it will be all over town and the stories will really start flying. I'll keep the skull out of sight for a while, just to see how big the horns will grow, and believe me, they will grow; and to hear the ideas about what it is and where it came from.
Cant wait to hear the stories!

Hope you have documentation for it. In my opinion, getting a game warden in on it is dumb! Don't show him yer Bald Eagle feathers, if yer making a war bonnet...

You could have hinted that it was a swamp ape skull...

I was at a hunting & fishing show in California some years ago, and one outfitter had a big strange skull on his table. I stopped, looked at it a minute, then asked him, "giraffe?" He said, "you're only the second person to guess that today" (it was mid-afternoon on a Saturday)

I brought back a large caribou shed from Quebec a number of years ago. I thought many times of placing it along a trail in the woods where a hunting buddy would stumble on to it. Thought that would be a fun trick, but never did it.

Bob- Fouke is only about 10-15 miles as the crow flies. Lots of woods and bottoms between here and there.
Miles- You're right.
Benchman- Nothing to worry about. This is Looouisiana! FWIW, I haven't got any feathers.
JSTUART- I can't explain small town Louisiana, but the whole town will get a laugh out of this in a few days, and my reputation, whether good or bad, won't suffer one bit. This gives the town something to talk about, other than mosquitoes and the heat!

You sir, live in the city. There are less than 250 in our town and most of us know each other. A good joke is always looked on with favor, as long as it doesn't hurt anyone.
I guess its just a different culture. Maybe some of the other La. fellows can explain it better.

Would love to hear how it turns out. I did basically the same thing with my Marco Polo skull and horns in the little village of Cental, Alaska. I hauled it into the bar at Circle Hot Springs to show some friends one weekend during the winter. There were quite a few tourists from Fairbanks visiting. Naturally there was one loud, obnoxious know-it-all who proclaimed that it was a pretty nice Dall sheep head but that he had seen many that were a lot larger ! He was at a table full of buddies and, like all loudmouths, continued to dig himself in deeper. He evetually claimed he had walked more miles in Alaska that anyone in that bar had ever ridden a snow machine ! That got a lot of chuckles and rolled eyes as many of the locals put thousands of miles on their snowgoes every year.
Later that evening , after he moved over to a table of local women, he came up and quietly asked me "what kind of sheep is that again ?" He probably had the world record for one of those too !

Its a Louisiana/ Deep South thing.....the gene pool is shallow and they tend to yarn ( tell a story...) and are not always careful with the truth..i.e. "no, that really wasn't my cousin you saw me with at the drive-in..." Randy, that's too funny.
A few years back I had a friend give me a shoulder mount of a African Warthog. I then gave it to a neighbor who mounted it in his office.
He's active in the Boy Scouts. Every time a new kid would come over and see that thing, they would ALWAYS say: That's the biggest Javelina I've ever seen.
It's always good for a laugh.
