Coming out of pawn soon in a gunshop/pawn shop I frequent will be a minty condition Ruger Model 96 in 17 HMR.
I love the 17 HMR caliber but have never owned a Model 96 Ruger in any of the several calibers it's been offered in.
Does anyone have experiences or opinions on these humble looking little Rifles?
I would especially be interested in observations on accuracy in the light barreled 17 HMR version.
Thanks in advance for any offerings.

VG,

What did they want for it?

DeFlave: I checked today and its not out on the shelves yet?
I don't know why and the price had not been set when I got to handle it last week.
I will check again tomorrow.
Pardon slow reply I have been busy gunshowing and shooting Ground Squirrels.

Deflave: I was pressed for time today (VarmintWife in car) and the shop was busy when I dropped in - the Rifle in question was seen by me in the back room storage rack still. So it has not sold - apparently.
I will stop in again tomorrow.

DeFlave: I checked today and the Rifle is still there in the back room - no price has been set as yet due to the busy-ness of the shop.
They have been selling guns like hot cakes and they are short-handed.
Will keep you advised.
I remember now my late friend Steve Cordes from Puget Sound country had one of these lever action Rugers in caliber 44 Magnum.
He was left handed and just loved the gun.
He passed on and the Rifle melted away into the hands of his only living relative from back east.
Enjoy the weekend.

Thanks VG.

Let me know if they hang a tag on it. I missed the boat on those 96's. IMO they were pretty cool. Would love one in a rimfire and a .44.

DeFlave: As of twenty minutes ago the Ruger Model 96 in 17 HMR is still on the rack in the back room of this shop.
I have asked about it twice and do not want to seem to "eager" for you (or me).
I have already spent this months allowance at the recent gun shows so I am broke and you are first up until Friday July 29 (last business day of the month when my retirement and pension checks show up).
I just bought a MINT condition long barreled (6 1/2" - "Government Target") Ruger MK-II (blued) semi-auto pistol and another Ruger 10/22 Deluxe Sporter with this months allowance so I am low on funds for now.

I bought one when they were introduced. Put a scope on it and used it as my primary rodent-remover around the house. Killed a fox, several stray cats, a coyote, some skunks, coons and possums. It was pretty accurate and handy.

I paid $255 for it new and they gave me more than that when I traded it in a few years later.

I should have kept that rifle....

Shortactionsmoker: Its amazing how some firearms "appreciate" value wise.
Years ago I bought a new Remington 40X-B in caliber 6mm Remington.
I paid $445.00 then some few years later I sold it for $800.00.
These Ruger Model 96's are so seldom seen on the market that I am not up on their values and or ability to appreciate in value.
I do know that "I should have kept that Rifle..." feeling - only to well!
I did come across a mint as new in the box Smith & Wesson Model 686 (with extras) yesterday and had to go "in hock" to buy it!
It is the 2 1/2 Model and I just could not pass it up at the price an acquaintance of mine was asking.
I just came from the shop in question and the Model 96 is still on the rack in the back room.
I am puzzled at what is keeping it there - the owner of the shop is a Christian fellow though and is well known for giving people extra months on their hocked items to pick them up?
I am not sure if this 96 was purchased outright by the shop or if it was in hock.
But one of the employees told me it would be up for sale - and that was some time ago.
