I am about to pick up a used barrel that is threaded and chambered in the caliber I want, It came off of a 700 SA which is what I'll be putting it back on.
What do I need to do to install such a barrel correctly?
Thanks

Install the barrel and then check the head space. If it is fine you're good to go.

I have done it a few times and then took it to a smith and had them check it.Cost about $30.
I barely remember using a new of brass and then using .001 0r .002 thick brass shim stock behind the case( with firing pin removed) and then keep adding shim stock until the bolt won't start to close. Then check SAMMI specs for chamber min/max dimensions. However it has been 30 years or so,and my memory is tad foggy

You can rent gauges from 4d reamers for a nominal fee

It's also best if the guy who threaded the barrel wasn't doing it at 4:55 PM Friday, and the guy threading the receiver wasn't doing it at 8:00 Monday morning while fighting a Pabst infection from the weekend.

good chance it will screw on and headspace. The stamping or writing on the barrel will be the biggest problem of lining up
A Doe walks out of the woods today and says, that is the last time I'm going to do that for Two Bucks.

Freaking alzheimers or something man.
I saw the short action, but then transposed the 270 in your name to the cartridge.
I'm losing grip....

The 243 AI makes a lot of sense as it removes the 243's primary issue of brass flow.
You can probably screw it in and use it as (I think) there is no factory 243 AI ammo.
forming cases is easy. neck a regular 243 up to 257 and then run it into a FL 243 AI die until the bolt will just close with some effort. the cartridge is now headspacing on the false should created. load em up with full house 243 (regular) loads and fireform them.
if you want it to meet Ackley specs exactly, then the previous suggestions are the way to go.
you may be able to rent headspace gauges from 4D reamers in MT. in using HS gauges make durn sure you know what you are doing or you can damage them !
sounds like a nice outfit !

Some years ago I bought a 700TI bbl from David Walter on classifieds. Screwed onto my 725 receiver perfectly by the time I lapped the bolt in
- but exactly upside down Wery accurate!
