I've seen many references to the 99f 308 being introduced in 1956. I have one with a G (1955) boss code ser.#9001XX? Correct? rare? thx

The guns right around the introductions and transitions are usually the most interesting one's to talk about. Be curious to hear what the data compilers have to say about it.

David's book SN table does say that some 900k SNs appear in late 1955. I would guess that if 1956 was the commercial launch of the 99F in .308, Savage would have had to have started making some in late 55 to get them shipped out to distributors for the 1956 catalog launch ... just my guess. I have a spreadsheet that I downloaded from another site that shows SN 90012x as a .308 with a 1955 "G" LBC.

Although I have not read it anywhere, I think Savage must have started using 900K serial numbers for receivers with the new produciton modifications for the longer Winchester calibers. Even though 700K SN were used in 56 and 57, I have no data on a .308 in the 700k or 800k SN range (in any model - EG, F, R, RS). Can one of the experts here shed light on my assumption.

I would think that a LBC "G" .308 is pretty rare.

The 700k series were still the old style for 300/250-3000, won't work for 243/308/358. We have actually seen a couple in that range that were 243's, and one lettered-but they wouldn't load and feed.

Sqweeler, is that rifle like a 900,000 series rifle on the inside of the receiver? Given that Savage was still producing old and new style receivers maybe it was just a serial numbering booboo.

Keith, the old receivers run to somewhere around 783xxx and have the H LBC (1956). These were used to build the .250's and .300's . The 900,000 serials production started 9/1955 in .308 (Greenleaf & JTC). So, there was an overlap where they were using both receivers. The Later style was not used for the .250/.300 till the old style receivers were use up.

Rifle doesn't belong to me,but I know it was a single shot as it would not feed rounds from the rotary.

Looking at the data it doesn't appear that the 774xxx serial would have pre-dated the start of the 900,000 so why use the old style receiver?

I guess they weren't function tested before they left as one might believe,maybe a single proof shot.

Must have been an early Tuesday morning, after a 3-day holiday weekend, when John, the barrel meister, picked up that .243 barrel and put it on that receiver.

I own a 99F in 300 Savage with serial number 769813. I don't remember what the LBC is. The LBC on this rifle is on the receiver, and I think it is G. I can't find my notes now and don't feel like removing the butt stock to find out. I bought the rifle from the original owner (a friend) who bought it new in downtown Paterson, NJ, when Paterson still was a nice place to live. As I recall, my friend used it to take a Canadian moose as well as many NY State bucks.

Have 7827xx and it's "H".Bought new in 1956 by my Dad.

So what I'm gathering is that while not rare or unusual it is one of the first 200 99s produced in the win. calibers and probably a very early 99f .308. Thanks for all replies.

While in excellent cond. it does have scope mounts and the rear sight was removed. Where to get a replacement? My plan is to put a period scope back on the rifle (weaver 2-7?) for my old eyes but I would like to have the correct sights avaiable.

I think it came from the factory D&T's for scope. If the Savage 99 stamp is on the left front of the receiver ring (vs right on top), it was D&T'd at the factory.

Correct/vintage rear sights are on ebay quite often. Lightfoot, here on this site, may have one for sale.

All the 243/308/358's were factory d&t.

Rear sights for the mid 50s and on Fs are not terribly difficult to find. Find some pics and look out on ebay, one will come up much sooner than later.
