I recently bought a little kershaw lock back knife for $15 and have been impressed with how good it is proving to be. Thinking about ithave found that a lot of the things that have served me well in the field for many years are items that were inexpensive to buy and while I have more expensive gear often it is left at home while the cheaper item makes the cut . For example

For the past 25 years I have had a compact 8x Pentax UCF binocular that has been packed all over the place. They are nice and clear and pretty light weight. I recall they were maybe $45 and ebay shows the going for $25-$30 used.

I have had a old southbend spin rod for probably 30+ years . It was about $12 to buy is just a composite glass rod but I have caught everything from bluegill to 12 lb northerns and catfish on it and more poundage than all of my other rods combined mainly because it is either behind my truck seat or sitting behind the door of the garage rigged and ready.

Really my old 870 express also rates this category. I bought it for about $175 in trade goods in the early 80's . It has been dragged around to take dove, quail, pheasents, geese, ducks, turkey, squirrels, rabbits plus various farm pests and targets of opportune

How about you do you have any cheapo gear that you just can't give up despite having more expensive gear available?gear that

Yups, lots of good, cheap stuff out there. My Fiskars hatchet, pretty much identical to the much pricier Gerber comes to mind. Leupold Yosemite 6x30s are another.

Older used stuff, especially good rifles with a few dents and dings, also qualify.

+1 on the Kershaw folders. The Volt II is my favorite edc. You can get them on sale for around $20 a pop.

Leupold 6x30 Yosemite binoculars around $75.00. Shimano Sienna spinning reels, $30.00. Victorinox, red handle, serrated blade, kitchen knife, $8.00. Remington 1100 & 870 shotguns, had a couple 35/40 years.

No problems with the binocs or reels over five or six years. The knife's something else, only had it about a year but it gets a lot of different kinds of use almost daily and holds an edge. The Remingtons, some bought used have worked as well for me as newer more expensive shotguns that have gone down the road.

Swiss Army watch. Had one on my wrist daily for 20 years. Still in sync with my atomic clock, but looking the worse for wear. Switched over to another cheap watch in the same price range- Bertucci Field Watch. Can't praise it enough for rugged daily wear in a shop environment. Titanium case, nylon band, Japanese movement.

A Rem 600 6mm at $99.95 in around 1963. Wife has taken it away from me as her deer/pronghorn unit. I've since replaced it with about 15 other more expensive units in a variety of calibers.

With inflation, $99.95 in 1963 is equivalent to almost $800 today. Is that inexpensive?

Savage 99EG's weren't exactly inexpensive when they were made.

What a beauty! Engine details please.

I had a '68 and a '69, but the '65s were the best. My favorite Poncho, however is the '63 Grand Prix, kind of an oversized GTO. Took a while to get all that steel moving, but the top-end was pretty good. The 8-lug aluminum wheels were pretty sharp. If I ever get cash fat I might just have to go find another one of those.

Remington 788's back when they were $89 bucks new.

And both Gerber & Kershaw make some great little everyday knifes for under $30 bucks. And you can get a pretty nice Swiss Army knife for just a few more bucks, too.

Marlin model 60, first gun I ever bought with my own money. I paid a whopping $45 for it brand new at Woolco in the early '80s. It has always been scary accurate and totally reliable as long as it is kept reasonable clean.

Yes, these are a great example. I usually carry a Hiker - in fact I have it on me now. I have several others though, including my late grandfather's Rancher, made back when they were stamped "Elinox" and purchased back in about the late 50s. It rode in his pocket long enough that the red colouring on the "Alox" scales is worn off everywhere but the bottoms of the checkering. Despite regular use over the past few decades it is still perfectly functional. Clearly built to last.

Unfortunately I"ve not had that luck with Lee. But then we used to pretty much abuse our stuff, loading typically more ammo than most, 20,000 or more a year typically. SOmetimes likely pushing 30,000.

Back to normal now, probably don't load more than 500 or so rounds a year.

Overall I've had pretty good luck with Lee stuff, but it depends on the specific product. Some are pretty tough, others aren't.

You won't regret it!

Another often overlooked piece of hunting gear that is stupid cheap, works every time, and could conceivably save one's life if circumstances find you stranded out back of beyond: the Bic lighter. Way better than rubbing two sticks together like a couple of Naked and Afraid morons.

Now after looking at the link, I want a pre-owned Titanium Bertucci.

I just need to bust my inexpensive but not junk $10.00 Casio to justify the purchase. Because I have a phone that tells the time, I rarely wear a watch but always do when in a blind waiting for legal shooting to commence and cease.

I have forgotten to put my watch on once that I can remember, over 50± years of daily wear. I felt so distraught without it that I left work to go home and get it. I sometimes forget my mobile phone which elicits nothing more than a shrug on my part. I once forgot my 28 gauge ammo for a long distance grouse hunt (and none to be found in the local stores)- which elicited another shrug (and retirement to a local bar). But I had my watch on.

An original Leatherman didn't seem inexpensive at the time, but turned into one of the best purchases ever. Its getting a little loose, but I doubt I will wear it out in this lifetime. Always on my belt and ready to fix things. I have to find another sheath for it before the bottom gives way.

Those H&R Topper 30-30 barrels mated to a modern NEF/H&R receiver with close out priced Bushnell Banner scopes are more accurate than a super cheap rifle should be. Lotsa fun for the grandangels!!

With inflation, $99.95 in 1963 is equivalent to almost $800 today. Is that inexpensive

Yes, I believe it is. At that time, I remember working a gas station for $0.75 per hour. Took me quite a few 8-hr days to come up with the cash what with taxes, social security etc taken out. The big Winchester, Remington, Browning, a Weatherby's units were running for 3 to 4 times that price, and were attainable solely in my dreams.

Just before I retired, I'd have $800 in hand in less than 2 days.

You got screwed, Remington 700 rifles cost $129.00 in 1963. It was also worth the extra $30.00 over a '99...

lillysdad, How you doing? well I hope.

I have never understood how a man can wear something on his wrist that will just get broken in a few days, or worse, will get caught in some kind of machinery? I haven't worn on my wrist for a long time, since early 20's maybe. Watches I do have generally end up in my pocket. Generally inexpensive ones also. Timex like!

Cant' do jewelry on fingers/hands either. Wife understands therefor I don't even have a wedding ring.

Knife and belt, you bet.

I don't understand guys that go out without a hat either, Stetson, Ball Cap, beanie, Stormy Kromer, even a dew rag or headband. Feel like I'm buck naked without one, especially in public. And I still have hair! smile

Geno

PS, $20 Browning folder, $50 Stetson (both USA made) have been great relatively inexpensive buys. Privi ammo not so bad in some of my guns either. Last 3 shot group in my .06 was 0.75', 2.5" above bull at 100. I can't complain. Figure it would kill a deer.

Kirk,

Yeah, I bought my first Remington 700 in 1974, a brand-new ADL .270, for $179 at a hardware store in Wolf Point. Which at the time was just about half a month's take-home pay for the job I had at the time. It turned out to be one of the most accurate big-game rifles I've ever owned, including a bunch of customs.

NOT trying to one up ya.

I bought my first 700 BDL 270 in Fayetteville Ar in 1976 for $149.00, At the same time Wally World's price was $179.

I bought my first 700 new at Gibson's in Bozeman for around the same money about the same year. I loaded up some Hornady 165 grain bullets and put a Bushnell 4X scope on it and went hunting. I shot a group with it when I was younger and didn't know better, but the group was as good or better than the one they had attached to a $600.00 Steyr they had in the Powderhorn. I shot the biggest elk I have ever seen with that rifle...

A Rem 788 in 308 circa '71 and the one-at-a-time Lee Loader that fed it. That rifle threw about anything into pretty small groups though I've seen fence posts that were better looking.

Kirk,

I mostly shot Hornady 150's in that .270, and it would put three into around an inch at 300--also with a Bushnell 4x!

Since we're strolling down memory lane...

My first new rifle was a 700 BDL .243 in 1972. The LGS sold it to me at his cost, as a favor, for around $130 as I recall. I transferred the 3-9 Bushnell onto it off of my Mauser, soon to be replaced by a Bausch&Lomb, which is another story. Took my entire tax refund check. (Oh to be a poor college student again!) It too was one of the most accurate factory rifles I ever owned.

As I recall, I was making around $1.50/hr. part time back then. After beer, gas, and cigarettes there was always money for powder and bullets. Thank god the GF liked beer, gas, and cigarettes too, and paid for her own.

Tri-Power! Awesome.
A 400 has to be a replacement block, but bolt-on stuff like intakes fit 'em all from 287 to 455.

I never had need for the wristwatch since cell phones, never understood needing 2 time pieces.

Now since an EMS certification, I wear a watch to take vitals all the time before the ambulance shows with doc in the box...

it would be the only reason I can find for watch.

I gave up wearing a watch for a little while after getting a cell phone, but soon started again, because I find checking a watch while out hunting involves far less movement and hassle.

Used to buy cheap Timexes, which would last several years, but after my last one died found the price had gone up to 30 bucks! Bought the cheapest Asian-made watch at Wal-Mart for $12.99 instead, and it not only keeps the most accurate time of any wristwatch I've ever owned but has now lasted several years too. In fact the only occasions when I've had to change the time on it have been when traveling to different time-zones, because so far it's always shown exactly the same time as my phone.

Jewelry of any kind was forbidden on my job because of the risk of shock or of dropping something into the works and blowing up circuit packs costing bazillions of dollars. Never had a wedding band until I retired. Three years later, she flew the coop, but gold had gone up enough that I made a little money on the ring. Win-win!

Never could stand to wear a wristwatch. Wore one if I had to but I seldom had to, I usually know about what time it is and now I have the phone.

Don't have belt loops on my bibbers so that's that.

But I carry two pocket knives! ... a small Schrade Old Timer in my left pocket for general pocket knife stuff and a Buck folder in my right pocket for bigger jobs and social security.

I"m rural. I like it even better when I"m back at home in the evening and don't have to see anyone other than Carolyn and Tiger.

I could actually give a damn less about what others think of me.

But I figure I"m weird...

Probably why we both enjoy the vast wilderness of AK so much in the fall, we dno't have to see or deal with many folks, if lucky, none.

When I need to stick my head in my phone to answer it, to read an email or a text or look at radar or such, I simply do...

Claiming to not care what others think, especially on a widely read forum, seems almost antithetical. If one truly does not care, wouldn't not posting anything be more appropriate?

Oh yeah, back to the OP topic:

Got a bunch of these off Ebay. Less than 10 bucks each shipped. Hard to beat as medium duty EDC. 8Cr13MoV blade steel at RC58 ain't terrible. Sharpens easily. Blade profile/geometry on the F723 seems to bring out the best of the Chinese mid-grade-ish stainless.

maybe so.

Maybe I'm some of both sides then? But mostly I have to lean towards not caring.

I hated that the fact that when I got into the fire dept we are forced to wear dress uniforms starched and pressed at times... I am a jeans and t shirt guy by far. Don't even own a suit. Had to go buy a suit coat 2nd hand for a recent funeral.

So if am dressing up against my will I must care eh?

Yes, and the same goes for meetings, or in court, or other occasions when hauling your phone out is going to attract adverse attention. I can't take my phone swimming or diving either.

I've had the same Seiko diver's watch - not a big overt one - for well over 20 years, and apart from a new battery and pressure test every few years it has neither missed a beat nor spent more than short intervals off my wrist. Amortising the purchase price over the time I've had it I think it fits the inexpensive/not junk description quite well.

Well, that just cost me 50 bucks. Thanks!

You won't regret it!

Yep, sent the money today for the pre-owned vintage titanium. It's amazing how often this site has me opening my wallet...😄

I have a Marlin 25 (22lr) that was dirt cheap when Santa clause gave it to me 35 years ago, Masonite stock, see thru bluing and all. In those years I have killed a couple of truck loads of small game with it. Its still the only .22 rifle I own and last weekend I killed a pd with at 225 yds with a cci minimag, I can not complain about it being cheap.

I bought my first Rem 700 for my 17th birthday in 1987, an ADL with nice wood in .25-06 for $300. It shot very well, and still does, but as a youngster I killed enough groundhogs during the summer with it to fill a train car so that the leade is now a little rough.

Personally, I don't like wearing a wristwatch while in the field, especially if the weather is hot. I carry a Hamilton built LL Bean mechanical (winding) pocket watch I bought about 30 years ago. It still works like a champ and I don't remember ever having it serviced. I don't remember what I paid for it, but it was well under $100.

bushnell sportview scopes. i was buying them from natchez a few years ago for 30-40 bucks depending on size. i had several rifles that i wanted to shoot until i could afford a "good" scope. most of them are still on the guns and are clear, bright and solid. the 4x especially is a nice scope. huge FOV and lots of eye relief. i have one on a 35 pump and i feel like i have a Terminator eye when i pull it up.

Talking of inexpensive, I picked this up from ebay last night for the princely sum of US $20.50.

Now that is a bargain.

I have a cheap Casio on my wrist, digital. Works for vitals too.

Why would you want to dig out your phone every time you need the time? Horrible.

Yeah, I like Kershaw too. Scopes under 450, used pickups, old tractors, and nice rifles.

For all my cheapness, I still dont like the Axis, American, and others like them.

When I was on my first lease in my early twenties. We were all sitting around the campfire one night drinking beer. One of the old guys stepped away from the fire to take a leak. When he came back he looked at me and said " Boy you will know you are old when it feels better to pee than it does to f---k". He was right!!

This is the LAST thing I thought of...perhaps if the thread was "You get what you pay for.."

Interesting. I've had excellent results from the Lee equipment I own.

Obviously your mileage has varied.

Be that as it may, they're at the top of my list!

This. Very accurate rifles.

Another great budget gun.

Okay, I'll submit a few. All those bring back Mausers that found their way into the deer woods. Cut down or replace the stock, get a K-4 on top of it, and go kill some deer. Same with the Springfields and SMLE's.

As mentioned above, the venerable Weaver K-4 El Paso. A good, no frills, working man's scope if there ever was one.

How many kids started out with an H&R single shot? Lots of dead critters courtesy of these guns.

Older 5 1/2 to 7 1/2 horse Johnson's, Evinrude's, and Mercury's. They just run forever.

How many of us still fish with a Mitchell 300? Way outclassed by the newer technology, but buy a couple spare bail springs, and these old reels will run a long, long time.

How many of us carried an original Barlow pocket knife as a kid?

Any bow made by Bear Archery. Admit it guys-us old farts all most all had at least one.

Really going back here, but how about a military surplus Jeep? Dad and his buddies bought two of them and made one "good" one out of the pair. It was used to drag out stumps, and get back into the depths of the deer woods for about 30 years before it finally died for good. They spent $185.00 for the pair.

My first center fire rifle was a Brno v24 in 8X57IS in standard military configuration for $40.00. The second was a M700 ADL in 270 Win with a old (brass ring) Bushnell 4x scope for $150.00

I purchased these during mid 1980's while in college.

most obvious one lately has been the Yugo mauser I bought that cost less than $300 including shipping and ffl fees, and controlled round feed. can't beat that for $300!

also, swiss army knives, lee reloading stuff, mission bows, used Toyotas, Remington 870s, marlin and ruger 22's.

Coleman lanterns and camp stoves were/still are a pretty good deal.

You'd have a hard time time wearing one out. I found the lantern my Grandpa bought to use in the barn a few years ago and after cleaning it up and replacing about 10 bucks worth of parts it works great.

It was made in 1941 so I think we've gotten our monies worth out of it.
