I need a new barrel on my Colt Python. Colt no longer does any repairs on pythons and sourcing a barrel is now up to me. I have heard of a shop in Montana that does good work on pythons but I can't find a number for them. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Not a hard job at all really. I have a 4" stainless python barrel on hand if that's what you need.

You undoubtedly heard of "Pompous Louie" from the Custom Shop in Hamilton. Don't waste your time and money. There are plenty of barrels available and even more 'smiths that are capable of the work...

Shrapnel,
I think Pompous Louie is the one someone had mentioned along with the same description.
I really hate to admit to this, but I ruined the barrel by doing single action shooting with my hand loaded .38 specials. I have never had a bad load in my 50 + years of reloading and lo and behold I put two squibs down the barrel before I realized what I had done. This was my very favorite handgun and I am absolutely sick about it. I bought it with some of my muster out money when I got out of the Navy in 1966. A beautiful 6" deep blue and has been the only hand gun I can hit with.
Would like to find a blue barrel and a gun mechanic that knows what they are doing on Pythons. I have willed this gun to my youngest daughter and don't have the guts to tell her that I ruined her Python.

Changing the barrel on a Python is no great task and any competent gunsmith can do it. Colt Python action work is another issue. You might contact Jack Huntington. He does excellent work and also might have a take-off barrel hanging around.

Have you actually called Colt? We took in a 1986 vintage, bright stainless Python on consignment late last year. Turned out to have an unrifled, smooth bore barrel on it. I called Colt and was surprised when they told me to send it back and they'd rebarrel it. A month later, it was back with a new barrel on it.

Yes I did call Colt earlier this morning and the girl in customer service said that they have not done any Python work for some time now and don't have barrels. She suggested I find a barrel and then they would do the repair work. However, thanks to a very great guy on this forum, I received the name of a gunsmith that will take my Python and fix it. I am happy once again.
