brought home a Remington 783 in .243 and picked up a box of 95 grain federal fusions. got it on paper at 50 yards with some old reloads and made my adjustments, moved to 100 for my first group.

the first three shots went into one 7mm sized hole, and two others were just apart from it for a half inch group with the first five shots, with factory ammo.

this rifle was $369 with scope, and then $25 off and then a $40 rebate.

so my $305 rifle drills groups like this. so maybe next time you guys are looking for a truck gun or a starter for a kid or something...$300 never shot so good.

take a look at this 'budget' rifle. it doesn't look like a high dollar rifle because it isn't. but it has a stock with a decent amount of fiberglass in it...not flexy at all. palm swells, adjustable trigger, #2 contour barrel, four shot METAL magazine, and a 9 twist like 243's should have had from the beginning.

if you have to cover your face so no one sees you shooting it, so be it. it will be worth it smile

and yes I own a mauser and a howa and have handled and shot high dollar stuff. but for banging around in the truck, varmint hunting in the mud and dirt, this one does the job. I have shot 3 others, two 270's and another 243...all shot very well, five shots under an inch.

just sharing this info since the other "budget" rifles get mentioned here and this one doesn't even though in my opinion it's far better than the others.

Thanks for the info. There's been a dearth of information on here about those rifles.

I've never seen one in person but I've read they took a lot of design cues from the Marlin X rifles after they bought Marlin. Too bad they decided to put it in a butt-ugly stock. The Marlins are by far my favorite budget rifle. If the 783s are similar, it doesn't surprise me that they shoot so well.

I have three Remington 783's in my truck. That's what I get for leaving the doors unlocked...

Like when the 3 Gunner's run their courses, they just dump the gun in a trash can barrel.

I bought one for $269 in 308. Heard a lot about Ruger Americans but I think this rifle is worth more than what I paid for it. Buddies got a Riger American I think I'll challenge him for a shoot.

I prefer classic.

I didn't think much of them until I handled one and then I bought it to try out. Had a 270 also and it put 5 under an inch with factory loads too. They're not gold plated classics but they shoot and they are as good as an sps IMHO just done differently*

I think that the Marlin X guns and the Remington 783s share the same barreled action design, just with different roll stamps and the knobs on the bolt handles are a little different. I like the Marlin X guns, but don't particularly care look of the 783 stock or trigger guard.

The Marlin plastic trigger guards can quickly/easily be swapped out for the metal trigger guards from the Marlin 981/983 series, perhaps the same swap could be done on the 783s.

the remington receiver is different. the marlin is a lot like savage's but the remington is a big cylinder with an ejection port cut in one side. very heavy and very stiff. that's what she said lol

the trigger and safety and bolt release are all marlin, but the barrel nut and barrel contour is different.

i think if people check these out they wouldn't mourn the marlins so much.

Now that they've been out for a little while, I keep thinking one will show up in one of the local pawn shops I venture into occasionally, but no luck so far.

Still, if the 243 or 7mm-08 will work for you, the $260 Marlin XS7s at CDNN are pretty inviting.

From what I have seen, the bolt heads are the same too. Pt&g has bolt heads in stock in case you want to change them.

Last Fall? these were $299 minus a $40 rebate and a free Marlin 22 rifle... I'll need one forsure if they do that again.

We never said they weren't accurate. In my own personal case, I shoot a LOT. Run 5000 rounds through the rifle and get back to me..... grin

Granted for an average shooter, they'll probably last a lifetime. Just like the RAR, which I abhor also. grin

I saw one in the rack at the LGS. One glance cured me of any desire to even pick it up.

Guess I'd better start locking my truck! laugh

The ugly bothers me a bit too much and so do the one piece plastic trigger guard/swivel studs/stock. Other than those issues it would be acceptable if it didn't say Remington on it.

Checked one out tonight then rushed to make sure the rig was locked! The one I handled was a 7RM and a bludgeon compared to a RAR. Respectfully, these ain't no 700 ADL. Heavy and bulkier than needed. Felt way worse in the hand than I'd imagined... I totally don't want one! sick

The weight would turn me off, along with the ugly stock. I had a 710 and it was a pig. The weight is one of the things I love about the Marlin X7. Mine weighs just over 7.5lbs scoped.
