I had a Fowler dial caliper that I was reasonably satisfied with, but now need to replace it as the spaniel knocked it on the floor this morning. Spent most of the day trying to rezero it (the calipers) without success.

I had a cheap digital prior to the dial caliper but it failed after a couple of years. Display blinked random numbers despite replacing the batteries.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a decent caliper in the less than $100 range?

Thanks.

I have had one of these for years and am still very happy with it;

Lyman Dial Caliper LINK

Also, I just bought one of these;

Lyman Digital Caliper LINK

I've had this one for a dozen years. I just changed the battery in it last week. First battery change.

Buy two or three of these at the close-out price and toss them when you drop them and they lose zero.

I keep a vernier caliper around just in case. No battery, no gears and dials, hard to have it go wrong. I guess it predates plumbing altogether. grin

No, but other than taking up a small bit of space the vernier imposes no cost or time for upkeep while I'm using my dial Mitutoyo.

Ditto 2x on the Mitutoyo digital. I also have a set of vernier calipers. Mathman, do a class on how to read them. Ha ha... The digital's are so much easier to use:

Me too. My brother in law is a machinist and gave me a Mitutoyo when I started complaining that I couldn't read the lines on the vernier any more. Damn old eyes.

Mitutoyo Dial for me. Been using it for a couple of decades, both in automotive and firearm-related applications, and they are still ticking. Haven't changed a battery in one for close to 20 years, either wink
