Anybody have any input or suggestions for such a build? Would be looking to use standard AR lower. Utmost precision not required as this would be primarily for fun and plenty of cheap steel ammo... The Daytona tactical kit has an appealing price but have heard sketchy things about their customer service.. Any tips or advice is much obliged..

Personally,
I would get one of the lowers designed to use AK mags, and plenty of East German steel mags to go with it.

OP; you gotta go with AK mags with the curve because the rounds are tapered too much for a straight mag to work well. That is the thing. RRA has a lower that accomodates the AK mags but I don't know if they sell it for a part; I have only seen the complete rifles. http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2014/12/foghorn/new-cmmg-mk47-mutant-ar-15-7-62x39/

CMMG sells them as complete lowers. MSRP is about $600.

Cert, never had an AR derivative 7.62x39, but can vouch for the Eastern block steel mags. BTW- Forget the Russian "wood" brown. Overpriced and garbage. Lips will degrade, if they aren't already when you get them, expensive, and.. just plain schit. Go with Eastern bloc steel. PS- New isn't much more than used.

I hear you guys on the mags and I've read the dedicated AK mag lowers are a little more reliable but those are a bit more coin.. Was definetly looking to go the cheaper route on this one, hence giving thought to the Daytona tactical package.
Flave, you were jockin DT a while back no? Speak at me...

I have not used a communist upper but I have used Daytona Tactical. Matter of fact 'flaveprecision runs Daytona Tactical exclusively.
We also run Smith & Wesson.
And Colts.

Cheap steel 223 is 25 cents a round and cheap steel case X39 is 25 cents a round, what value do you see in X39 AR upper? All I see is more problems for the same cost.

Jimmy... I hear you, and have no decent answer other than something a little different to play with.. If enough guys said they had tried it and it was a goat!$%# I'd likely pass but until then I gotta support the economy best I can:)
If anybody has experienced those problems I'd like to hear about them..

I recently bought a Stoner complete 7.62x39 upper w/bcg from Midway along with two 30 and one 10 round Stoner mags.
300+ rounds of Winchester, Remington, PPU, Hornady, Tula and handloads without a malfunction. One light primer strike on the Tula. 1.5" groups at 100 with all but Winchester and Tula which opened up to about 2.5"

Palmetto has a deal, expires noon today, on their "KS-47" AR lower that takes AK mags. http://palmettostatearmory.com/ks47-lower-receiver-ksb-retail.htmlA downside is it only works with their upper - but their prices & selections are decent, so I ordered one. Will be interesting to see how well it works.
