Anyone here have experience making chokecherry jam?

We have a bunch of chokecherry bushes and the birds have let them be this year.

Kid #2 is interested in making something out of them. Only thing I have ever heard of using them for is to make jelly or jam.

Anyone have a recipe or suggestions?

Is chokecherry jelly any good? Got the boy to try the chokecherries. He wasn't impressed with them raw.

Tarkio, never made it myself. But, just googled it and there are several recipes out there.

Good luck and report back, please!

It is good, but takes a lot of sugar

When I was a lot younger, I used to go out on the Uncompahgre Plateau with my Dad when he was working, and we would pick choke cherries during the lunch hour. Mom would make syrup for pancakes and some jam with them. My Dad loved it - I would eat it and I definitely preferred it over the apricot jam that she made. Just personal preference. It is good, just be prepared to use a lot of sugar.

Do jams customarily use a large percentage of sugar in their makeup ?

My blueberry recipe calls for 4 cups of berries followed by 3 cups of sugar. WOW but good !!

Forget the jam!

Make syrup!

3 cups berries, 1 cup water, 1.5 cups sugar. Bring to a boil and then mash in a colander to separate the pulp and seeds. Strain the pulp/seed mix through cheese cloth take all the juice and freeze t up in pint/1/2 pint jars.

Can't be beat on french toast or pancakes. Brown venison steaks and then finish in they syrup turning until everything is coated well and caramelized. Works really great like that on pork tenderloin too.

If anyone gets the idea to buy chokecherry syrup in the store, make certain you get the real thing and no high fructose corn syrup. The HFCS will not caramelize properly and when it gets good and hot it tastes like moose turds.
