Nice rifle. I've wanted a Kraig for years but haven't found one yet that was priced right and clean.

Sporterized, or original carbine? smile

The Krag was an interesting, and well made rifle.

Patrick,

It's a cut up infantry rifle. They are very interesting. And slick as a gut! While I was at the shop I could cherry pick. If it had a good bore it generally went home with me. Love em!!!

Bob, like we were talking about Sunday morning before everyone had to leave for home. It would be a fun time to have some sort of military rifle match at Roosevelt, and again at Armijo Springs next year.

I of course like ALL rifles but have a particular fondness for Krags. We have a military shoot at or club in western PA every April and ANYTHING goes as long as it was used in a military and must have irons (receiver sights good too). Brings out a bunch of neat stuff - I usually use my K31 but have used krags and springfields (the younger crowd calls a bunch of us "old school" as about all they shoot are "black" rifles - but hey at least they are shooting!! it is fun to whoop up on them with a vintage rifle grin ). Just picked up a Norwegian Krag in 6.5X55 that I want to use next year.

Since they did the dangerous game rifle shoot, I'd be all in for a military or a Krag competition....

I've got a KRAG, A 98 Mauser or 3, a couple of Enfields and a 03 Springfield....

KW, we have similar tastes. I picked up a "bubba'd" Krag a couple years ago for a song. Had to have it cuz the cheekpiece is on the right side and the Lyman. Cool rifles, bubba'd or not.

Ok. More Krag porn this morning.

[Linked Image]

I gifted that top Krag to another local Campfire member who was generous to me. So I had a slot open for this new one.

The middle Krag in Colorado after elk.

[Linked Image]

I sweated on a new front sight and installed a handguard from S&S firearms that does not have rear sight cut out. Also sports Redfield (#70?) receiver sight. Not D&T. Just have to modify magazine cutoff.

What was the mantra of troops in the Philippines during the Insurrection? "Civilize them with the Krag!"

Nothing finer than a good Krag. Slick action, accurate, and a natural pointability added up to a great combo. Box magazine hanging off the side makes for an ugly gun? Bah, that's another of its endearing traits. That magazine is fool proof, easy to load (dump 'em in and slam 'er shut), and not in the way at all once you're used to it (which takes about 5 seconds).

Last verse is my favorite!

"Social graces they are few,
And the women smoke and chew
And the men do things the Padres say are wrong
But the Padres cut no ice
For they feed on fish and rice
And our soldiers they all sing this Merry song!

Damn, damn, damn, the philippinos!
Cross-eyed khakyak ladrones,
And beneather ours starry flag
Civilize em with aKrag
And return is to our own beloved homes!

(As all three verses are sung at Quemado every year. Not a PC tune)

Ok, I've had some bourbon! Second verse! Everybody sing!

Underneath the nipa thatch
Where the skinny chickens scratch
Only refuge from the hot sun all day long
As I lay me down to sleep
Slimy lizards 'or me creep
And our soldiers they all sing this happy song!!!

(Refrain)

You're givin' me Ideas! Next, I'll be checking pawn shops and gunstores.

PS, if I can ever make it to a camp event, I've got a sporterized .303 and an all original Mod 96 Swede. Guess I'd have to find room in the truck for them too!

The Krag I previously pictured was an old family gun - my late father and both his brothers got their first deer with it, many moons ago. It stills shoots well, though it has a fairly rough patch of pitting in the bore. After killing a doe with it, I gave it to an uncle, and I think one of his grandsons now has it. They weren't excited when I discussed how to load for it smile

This is why I don't have a Krag at the moment:

[Linked Image]

The Ruger .30-40 can take loads that are much heavier than safe in a Krag. At some point I'll acquire another Krag and revisit mild .30-40 loads. smile

Neat! I had a Bannerman awhile back. I tried some cast bullets but didn't have much luck until I tried some .312-.313 bullets a friend cast for his 303. Groups tightened up to very respectiable.

Nice rifle.

I'd even take a sporterized version.

My first Krag, an 1896 Carbine, set me back all of $40 in 1969. (Carbines commanded a premium even back then.)

I have a spare action if anybody is looking to do a sporter.

Yeah, then the prices started going up. When I bought my 1899 Carbine in 1979 I had to pay $85 for it. (LOL). I still have it. It is worth a bit more than that now.

My first Krag was in 1975. Infantry rifle. I think I paid a C note for it. I really don't remember. I do remember it keyholed. So it went away.

Live and learn.

A friend of mine found a rusty Krag in the trunk of an old car in his father in law's garage after he passed. He offered it to me for $25.00, I was shocked when a Krag accumulator/restorer walked over to my gun show table and offered me $300.00 for it.

I took apart a customers Krag infantry rifle for cleaning and found a piece of paper stuffed inside stock. Under barrel channel.

"This rifle issued to Cadet xxxxx, Missouri state Univ 1911"

I think that was the correct school.

My only Krag is a .22 Hornet made from a Krag action sometime in the 1920s. Single shot of course, but a nice sporter, professionally built with a checkered pistol grip stock that covers the magazine opening.

Suffers from using a .223 bore and 1/16" twist from being barreled with a Winchester .22 rimfire barrel. But with the right bullets and load, she still shoots very well.

Krag actions are stronger than people think and were rebarreled to many different cartridges back in the day. The real trick was getting the new rounds to feed in the old magazine. A friend has a .25-35 conversion that feeds great. Some don't.

Well took a trip This weekend to see my old compadre up at his ranch. Well he kinda fell in love with the old Krag so I just went a gave it to him. With a fresh box of 220 grain hog thumpers.

If anybody is interested, there is a restock sporterized U.S. Krag at the Cabela's in LaVista, NE, for $310. It has an early Weaver K2.5 in a Weaver "N" side mount installed. It is in the used gun rack, not the Gun Library, but I'm sure that the Gun Library guys would pull it and give you their opinions if you ask.

Hearing VERY good things about the Criterion short chambered, "Replica" barrels,...

Krag's have got soul, and a well tuned .30-40 is a fine arm.
