... on sale online at midnight August 3/ The list of licenses available goes online July 27th (this coming Wednesday).
Have a cow tag from the drawing but haven't decided if I'll buy a leftover cow tag or get an OTC bull tag for my second license.

Hi Coyote_Hunter,
Thanks for the info. I really appreciate it. As it is, I have one general season deer tag in a very good unit of Utah. I'd like another trip on line if it's worth while. So I'm gonna check Colorado leftover bull tags. But I'm sure I'm not gonna find a rut hunt.
It doesn't get much more exciting than rut huntin' bull elk.
Huntin' huge bull elk is like catching huge tuna: one ain't enough.

OTC w/cap and all OTC licenses went on sale today at 9 am.
We got our two OTC w/cap bull tags in the only unit that has them. Lot of bear tags though. Now I have a cow elk ML tag for Sept and a bull elk tag for Oct 22

Just got off the phone with the CPW... they're having "server issues" they hope to have the list up today, but it may take a couple days to fix the issue.

This the same outfit that had its servers go down for hours two years ago when they decided it was a great idea to sell all the leftovers at 9am?
The same outfit that sent me my elk tag a month late this year?
The same outfit that didn't get the memo that the leftovers list is supposed to be released today July 27th? Must of just snuck up on them ninja like.

You'll want to be in line at a small store, well before 9am, likely well before opening too. Might even test them out the night before to make sure they know how to quickly sell a license. There is going to be a mad rush on some of these quality licenses that were returned that take 5-10 points each to draw. Lots of people are going to get their hopes up now that they have seen the list, only to be disappointed. On the other hand, some people are going to score a great license for no points. I'm glad these quality licenses are being resold, but I think logistically it is going to cause problems with customer satisfaction for those that don't get what they want, claiming it was rigged or the machines go down again. Or god forbid, only some machines go down.

Someone turned in a 61 archery bull tag. That is surprising. Don't have the patience to wait in line but good luck to whoever is going for that. Takes 12 points or so typically.

There are some GREAT tags available for all animals. Really happy that they put returned licenses back into the public draw this year and from here on out. Always seemed such a waste to have some of these very limited tags returned and lost to the wind.

Standing in line and I was 4th. First two guys were in and out in 4 minutes flat. Third guy has his daughters info written down and they have to manually enter everything. The clerk is good, but the first code was sold out. He had 5 codes written down and they have been manually entering her info over and over, getting sold out codes. All the while I'm sitting behind him waiting and waiting and waiting. They've been at it 15 minutes. Now he's taking the time to look up other codes on his phone. I'm gonna kill him...

He fiddled around with her until 9:30, never being successful getting his daughter a tag. By then, mine were gone as well. Bummer.

I was at a small chain store (Big-5), several back in line. They couldn't get the system to work initially and another location of same chain called and said they were also having issues. Finally issued the first tag around 9:20. When I got to the counter at 9:45 or so, the tags I really wanted were gone. Did get one that had started with 101 available when the games began.
Anyone else have success at a non-CPW retail location right at 9:00? (Just wondering if the hiccup was with Big-5, or CPW...again.)

Total fiasco here too... Second guy in line took over 1/2 hour, I wanted to punch him in the ear. I finally managed to get a pair of antelope late season doe tags, so the boy and I will have some fun at Christmas.

Where I was at the problem seemed to be people didn't have their CID with them.. Then the tags they wanted wasn't available they would stand their looking for other tags wtf. So much for prior planning

It was a total joke at wally world. Everything you guys reported: machine down, people not prepared, no hunter ed card, machine printer was jammed, guys shopping for codes, plain and simple it caused the line to be 5 times larger and slower.
I was trying to get an usually easy to get doe tag, 2 guys before bought one, and when it was finally my turn it was sold out.
Total time spent in line, was 65 minutes before 9am, and then 80 minutes in the line. I was 18th in line. At least 5 guys left the line when the tag they were hoping for was sold out.
Had I been serious I should have done it differently.
I thought it was an easy tag, there were near 100 of them on the list for that unit. I figured 18th in line would get it done. But I did not account for the time waste/ time suck that each guy would have with the "code shopping" trying 5+ codes out for each species.
On the plus side, the DOW has traditionally and consistently fubar-ed this license thing for many years, so I really expected some major issue- and should be accustomed to disappointment by now.
Oh well. I tried and failed big time.

So you guys that went to Walmart....were they able to start issuing at 9:00 or was there a 10-15 minute lag until they issued the first tag? The retailer I went to had a lag when they were getting "funny" codes and I'm not sure if it was on the CPW side or the retailer's (Big-5) side.

A guy got the unit 61 1st rifle elk tag from the Fruita Coop this morning. I imagine the snags were more with people than with the system. what's your CID #? etc.

I was at our local Safeway store. It worked right away at 9:00 and the two first guys in line were ready, had their previous license and it took two minutes tops each for them to get their tags. Then the guy in front of me with his xeroxed info for his daughter fouled everything up. The clerk was VERY good, but the dumbass had her enter in 5 different 1-only units for deer and it all had to be donr manually. I'm pretty sure I would have gotten both my cow tag and deer tag had he not fouled me up.
He had a much right as I did to be there in line, I just wish he would have had her CID and it would have been done in 4-5 minutes instead of 20+.

The Walamart I went to started to type info in about 5 till nine.
I don't understand the CID problem because they only need to swipe your driver's license and all the info comes up.
Of the 20 or so inline,I didn't see one person furnish a CID.
There was an older gent working one of the machines that was typing like me. One finger and he took a while with each one.The gal beside him processed 4-5 tags to his one.
Yes there were a few in line with 4-5 choices that didn't end up with any tag. My neighbor got the single cow tag that was left over left over for Unit 54 though .Probably it was a turned in tag.
I imagine anyone who went to an agent or CPW office at noon, encountered any lines.

Sorry you guys (and gals and others) had so many problems.
Didn't bother to go as there were 1,238 cow tags for the unit I wanted. Last year there were tags left over into October, which allowed Daughter #1 to get a resident license instead of a non-resident.

Maybe you need CID# to get a license for someone else such as a daughter, son, wife, etc.

made well over 1000 calls between 5 of us, got through once and then got disconnected. Updated the list a little later and found out pretty much every Elk Archery tag was going. Had my hopes up for nothing! If they do this again, i guess I will have to take a vacation to Colorado that week!
No more returned tags will pop up since it's less then 30 days til season???

It's been a learning process as we figured out the area we wanted to hunt (24) was part of the draw a day to late to sign up. Nonetheless still excited for our first Elk hunt, and plan on trying out 34.

Someone turned in a 61 archery bull tag. That is surprising. Don't have the patience to wait in line but good luck to whoever is going for that. Takes 12 points or so typically. Turns out my buddy was 2nd in line in Aurora and the guy in front of him got this tag, but since the clerk screwed around so much my buddy wasn't able to get the ones we wanted

Sounds like "welcome to California" Apparently all these people moving in are either not pot heads, or pot heads that hunt.
I have my license, always look for anything else I might want in the deer, antelope, and even a left cow.
I am in it for the broader experience anyway, good fire, conversation (lies), a little beverage, and see some pretty contry.

Can I ask you guys a question? I have been looking at the regs all weekend. I'm trying to put together a last minute hunt on the cheap (kitchen project went way way over budget). I'm looking at the NW portion of the state Lower Yampa and Green river areas specifically. I see that they have leftover tags and OTC. First question is I can find the tag number in the list but what I can't find is how to read the code. I am assuming that the last 2 stand for the season ie. 2R. By the way I'm looking to go second season as that is what works with my time frame. I'm not looking for trophies here just a legal animals. I was going to buy deer and elk tags. I've got 8 windows open on the tool bar trying to figure it all out. Deer would be the primary focus elk would be the bonus. Can you you guys help me here please. Thanks

First go to the map that has the Game Management Units on it. .Find the Game Management Units in the area you want to hunt.
As an example the Green River runs thru Units 201 and Unit 2. The Yampa is the dividing line it looks like between Units 2,3, and 11
Then go to the deer draw section of the Big Game Brochure that list Units , dates , sex , and hunt codes.
Unit 2, 2nd season,the hunt code is D-M-002-02-R for a buck tag Unit 201 , 2nd season ,the hunt code is D-M-201-O2-R Unit 3, D-M- 003-02-R Unit 11, D-M-011-02-R.
Now go to the leftover license page and match those hunt codes to where there are left over tags.
Same with elk

That is great information Saddlesore gave you. You can also, with that information, call the licensing number found at the Colorado Division of Wildlife web site and give them that info and ask if there are any tags left. I have found them to be very helpful. You can then purchase the license you want right then.

I'm kind of looking at both sides of Strawberry as as my primary hunting areas and possibly a jaunt into 301 if time allows.
