Going on a Moose hunt this fall. Time is short. I have selected Federal Premium 165 grn. Trophy Copper for my .300 win Mag. They chrono out of my barrel at 3150fps and shoot consistently under an inch. I normally reload but not for this one. I also have a .338 Win Mag. Handload is 69 grs of Imr4350 behind the 210 TTSX Barnes Chrono says 2850 fps. Also accurate. I am sure they both will do the job but am asking opinions especially on the Trophy copper bullet. Northern BC Moose. I know, right, lots killed with .30-.30s and British .303s. but their tag cost 5 bucks and they hunt all season long.

To me, the 300 WM is about 180 and 200 gr bullets. 165's are better left to the 308 and 30-06.

My daughter killed her moose last year with a 270 Winchester and regular ol 140gr interlocks. Point being you will just fine with either one

I'd use either to let daylight into a moose. I think you'll be best served by taking the rifle you favor most.

In the context of monos - we are, afterall taking about the Trophy Copper here - I find this generalisation untrue.

Example - Hornadys heaviest GMX bullet in .30 cal. is the 165 gr. They load it in .300 Win. Mag. and Weatherby Mag.

To the OP -

as you say, time is short. Your rifle shoots said ammo well.

A .30 cal 165 Trophy Copper at .300 WM speeds is ample moose medicine.

These are pictures of an Alaska moose hunt I guided - we must have really found the smallest, legal bull possible... :-)

Cartridge used was .30-06 Sprg. with 165 grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claws. First shot downed the moose at 150 yards + plus one finisher for insurance.

Im taking a 6.5-06 to BC for my Moose hunt. Shooting 127 gr Barnes LRX at about 3000 fps. Your .300 will get the job done. Good Luck on your Hunt.

Either would e fine for moose, but one may want to consider if there will be a chance of a bear encounter. Slim chance, but I was told to take my rifle with me everywhere out there.

I would be inclined to use the 338 with heavier Nosler Partitions. I used 300gr NPs and 270gr TSX in my 375 on my two trips west.

Ignore the naysayers, the loads you are wanting to use are more than adequate. Those are much tougher bullets than what a lot of guys use here successfully for moose.

7Mato, good to see you feeling better are heading north this fall. Hope all goes well and you bag a big one with your 6 & a half-hot six. Those Barnes should let the air out of one, for sure.

I'm heading to Alberta for moose in early October, but I'll be taking my 35-06...of course wink along with some 225gr TBBC's.

Thanks You Sir

Good luck on your Moose hunt I think the Whelen will work just fine. I bought a donor 270 that I almost sent of to be rebored to .35 whelen for the moose hunt. I talked myself out of it for some reason.

All I know is that a 210 TTSX in 338 caliber was a lightning bolt from God on the two I've used it on.

210 ttsx is all I run in 338-06... has worked fine on AK moose so far and I expect it'll never be wanting.....

Either bullet/cartridge will do the job on lung shots. Should you have a screw-up, I would favor the the heavier for a going away pelvic shot that is usually quite effective.

I would avoid neck shots with the lighter bullet as the neck is the toughest part of a big bull and shots that don't tag the spine or a major artery may not put him down.

Have fun with either load/rifle. (I'd use the 300 just because it has "moose" written all over it based on the tons of trouble it has caused me to be involved with - on account of my partners; I use an '06 when I carry a '30'.)

Just don't come back here and expect us to believe any excuses you have if you screw things up; neither combo leaves much room for failure on their part! smile

While I agree with this, the combo is very workable.

I tend to think of 308...30'06...300wm as shooting increasingly heavier bullets at similar speeds more than any other metric.

Since those are both solid copper bullets, the 165 seems about perfect to me in the 300, whereas the 210 in the 338 is toward the lighter side of things (though a perfectly acceptable lightness; and I've caught heavier monos in the caliber in moose - and caribou). The Federal load in the 300, besides a nice speed edge, also uses a tipped bullet as well. But again, either will leave little for which to find excuses if a fellow doesn't pull his part of the bargain. (How's that for parsing the gack in Looneyville? laugh )

Edited to add what I was thinking initially in my previous post. The two choices are so equally suited, I know I'd be looking at the rifles themselves to decide the better suited. The better-carrying, better balanced for offhand shooting rifle would be my pick. smile
