Until serial number range 387,xxx - with a very, very few exceptions. Speigel EG's had some checkering before that, a couple of 22HP EG's have checkering, and one 30-30 EG.
According to standard serial number ranges that have been published, that would probably be towards the end of 1939. So probably catalogued as checkered in 1940. Rick or somebody may have better dates?

I believe that is correct, 1939-1940 was the cataloged transition from plain to checkered. Savage's transition to military production and the lingering effects of the Great Depression are likely the primary reason for checkered 99EGs in 22HP, 30-30, and 303 to be uncommon.

So there has to be way more checkered than non-checkered during the EG's lifespan.

So there has to be way more checkered than non-checkered during the EG's lifespan. Except for the checkered .303s, .22HPs, and 30-30s - more years uncheckered then checkered for them. If 1940 was the official cataloged intro year for checkering, then these calibers would have only had a 1 year run in checkered.

Uncheckered EG's are far less common than checkered.
Far less.
300's are the only ones that pop up with any regularity.

There were far more 99s made after WW2 than before WW2, and far more 99EGs in 300 made after WW2 than in any other configuration.
