For no logical reason I have a deep seated urge for a turn handle 250 Savage. I am curious as to what donor you guys might prefer. 22-250 or a 243 Win. or? Re-bore or re-barrel? If this subject has a thread point me there but the search didn't help. Thanks

Why does a man who is 50 pounds overweight complain about a 10 pound rifle being too heavy?

Start and stop with a tang safety Ruger 77 RSI.

Nothing wrong with a MKII RSI either, but they ain't as light as a 250 should be.

All I'll say, if you screw one together, put a 1-9" tube on it.

I see them on GB from time to time.

The nicest modern 250-3000 that I recall seeing was a Dakota Arms mannlicher at around $7K and the nicest old 250-3000 that I recall seeing was a G&H Springfield with the action shortened, also around $7K.

EDIT: One the nicest looking 250-3000s that I've owned is the 1986/87 limited run of Winchester 70 Lightweight Carbines. I've restocked mine with a 70 Fwt stock and it looks sort of like a modern version of the Savage 1920. The only downsize is that, for some unknown reason, Winchester/USRA made them with a 1-14" ROT barrel.

You didn't state a budget, but having a Kimber 84M so chambered would be a sweet rig. Shop around until you find one with wood you like and then have it rebarreled.

You could buy the .308 RSI that deerstalker has in the classifieds, and rebarrel it.

ODS, find an old 22-250 and send it to IT&D for a 9 or 10 twist Douglas. That would probably you're cheapest bet and still have a nice rifle. powdr

That is sweet rifle Butch (as usual ;)).....being somewhat of a 250-3000 hound I like the Cooper 54 classic for a factory rifle - although the Ruger RSI and Ultralight are pretty sweet. My favorites though are two custom builds, both vintage and both done "right" for this cartridge (IMHO - both with 1:10 twists which stabilize any of my favorite deer bullets) one is a G&H sporter on a Mauser 98 Kurtz action and has double set triggers....the other was done by a local western PA gunsmith who was known for super light sporters in the 50's and 60's built on a Sako L571 action. I will try and find my photos of them for this post smile.

I have piled up a bunch of deer and a few other larger game over the last 30+ years of using this cartridge on game......fun little gun!

p.s. IMHO this cartridge is best served in a rifle that does not exceed 7.5 lbs ready to hunt and a barrel no longer than 22"

Watch GunBroker for a custom 250-3000. They do show up once in a while. That is where I got my custom 250-3000 build on a Remington 600 action with a beautiful full length stock. I mounted a 2-7x33 scope on it and it is a light, compact hunting rifle. Still have not decided with grand kid is going to get it for their first deer rifle! For years I watched for a 250-3000 Savage 99A but the prices were more than I wanted to put in one. Now that I have handled the 250-3000 in a Rem 600 action, I know it is a lighter combination than a Savage 99 will ever be. Buy a used Rem 600 or 660 action, put a 250-3000 chambered barrel on it and you will smile every time you pick it up.

I have a 257R built on a 1909 Argentine Mauser action. If you can find one it should be fine for the 250-3000. I think a small ring Mexican mauser will work as well also. I'd definitely go with a 1:9 or 1:10 twist, my pre64 M70 is 1:14 and it's hard to get the longer bullets such as the Accubonds or ballistic tip to shoot well. It will shoot minute of deer but it's not as accurate as the Roberts.

Got a buddy with one in a Kurtz. He just wanted a mauser with double triggers and he found it. He nor the seller knew what he had. Where am I when they turn up.

Actually when he bought it, it had a rechambered Winchester heavy barrel and a butchered stock. It was in 22-250. He sent it to David Christman to have a new light weight barrel installed in 250-3000 and a new stock and a rust blue. Sure wish it was mine.

The Kurtz action and 250-3000 go together like ice cream and apple pie wink . That combination was my holy grail of rifles looked a looooooooooooooooooooong time before I found one I could afford (even then I probably paid more than I should but considering how many I have seen in my life time I went for it.....in this case the seller knew EXACTLY what he had - I rarely get those kind of deals and certainly not on a "holy grail")!! The one I got was well used (not abused) and will need a refresh as soon as I can get my shop back up after the "forced" move. Until then I will just hunt with it when the chances arise. The double set trigger was a pleasant bonus grin

Oh though not a custom rifle it was customized with the stock. I have a 250-3000 1-10 twist Ruger tang short action with a 22 inch barrel. It was sent to a stock person who re-checkered the forearm and shaped the forend into an Alexander Henry like the Ruger No 1 A-1 style. The stock was re-finished in a British dark reddish oil finish like you would see on a Rigby. Original red pad. Trigger has been tuned. I am really looking forward to this fall with this rifle. Have not even shot it yet as I have not settled on a scope yet.

Not a turnbolt, but rebarreling a nice Browning Low Wall (not one of the current Winchesters with the yellow pine stocks) wouldn't suck either. Most of the early ones have great wood and go for $1200-$1500, not much more than what a stock alone of similar quality would run. A little rework on the checkering to remove the borders would really class one up.

This is my Hornet. The wood is about average for models of the same vintage. Some are much nicer.
