Wondering what powder to use for my 6mm with 55s.

Have RL15 and IMR-4064 on the shelf but am wondering if those may be a fuzz on the slow side, maybe not.

Any body running the 6 with 55s and if so what are your top powders?

Did tons of experimenting with mine...

Those are the first two powders I'd reach for...

AR COMP, 3031 or 4895 would be the others.

The most accurate powder out of my rifle, ( and almost all of them were tack drivers) turned out to be H 414.

about all of those will easily yield 4000 fps plus...

another sleeper for velocity is H 380, and its very accurate also... just not real temp sensitive, same as H 414.

with either you don't want a hot load on a hot day, especially if you are continuously firing like in a prarie dog town.

H414/760 is the one powder that pops up as the top in a 6mm, lighter bullets everywhere I look. Have a partial can of the 414 in the cabinet as well.

Ramshot Big Game works very well too, as it should since the burn-rate is similar to 414/760.

I particularly like Ramshot Big Game with 70r flat based bullets in my Stevens 200. It shoots very well with the Speer 70 gr TNT as well as the Nosler 70 gr Varmageddons. I have had better accuracy at longer range with the heavier bullets.

Would think RL-17 would really shine with the 80 grain and up bullets. Hear impressive things about it in the cartridges it is suitable for.

IIRC, 6mm Rem was one of the rounds listed in the initial RL-17 data.

Definitely impressive velocities in their data with 70-85 grain bullets. I just happen to know where a can of this is sitting.

May try it with the 85 grain Sierras I deer hunt with.

Sorry, think 70 grain is the lowest weight bullet I've tried in my 6mm Remington. Also, R15 or A4064 is not too slow for the 6mm Remington. But, if you want a faster powder, suggest you try IMR 8208.

Chuckle, recall one of our private ranges board of directors commenting his 6mm Rem shot quite well with H4831 with compressed loads. But seriously doubt, he was using a lower grain 6mm bullet.

I like the Ramshot line of rifle powders for reloading. It meters great. However, only in the last 5 or so months I've been able to find TAC and Magnum powder on the internet. Been about two years plus since I've found any Ramshot Hunter or Big Game Powder. Ramshot claims its shipping it from Belgium (about all Ramshot, if not all ot it, is from there), but darn if I can find it.

I agree with Grand, Varget.

It works well in the 243 (4050 fps) and 6mm-284 (4200 fps), so it should also work just fine in the 6mm Rem.

Varget is very stable over a wide range of temperatures a real plus for year round varminting.

FYI, the BC of the 6mm 55 gr BT is higher than the .224 55 gr BT!
.276 vs .267 respectively.

H380 was my go to powder in the 70's for all my varmint bullet loading in my 6mm Rem. My varmint and deer load today is the Hornady 87 gr BTHP and Win 760

And scooting at 4000+ fps they choot nice n flat too. Have a bud running them in his 243 and I am wanting to 1 up him a bit. They for sure put a hurt on them coyotes he shoots with his.

Not much within 400 safe with his rig.

Hodgdon don't list it for 55 or 60-gr bullets, but if you ain't using Superformance behind 65 - 80-gr bullets, you're missing an average of 140 fps off the maximum velocity. Not that top velocity is always the prize, but if you back down from there to find accuracy, you're probably still considerably ahead of the next best powder.

For 55-gr you should try IMR 4166 at over 4000 fps. Its anti-coppering feature will come handy, and for all-season hunting its temperature insensitivity will as well.
