What's your opinion of Eberlestock Packs? I have never seen one in person, but like the way they carry a rifle in the pictures.

I love mine. I a after looking for a long time to find a sling for my savage 99 that didn't involve drilling holes I found a Erblestock pack in the classifieds for a 100 bucks. Perfect size for a day pack. Guns out of the way if I'm successful and in my hand if I'm not.

The recent ones I've seen have all been polyester junk. One of my hunting partners still uses one. The damn thing weighs around 10lbs empty. F that.

I've used them a lot, and they're great for packing rifles and a bit of gear but they are not so good for packing serious weight. They're simply not made for that.

For what I do, they're not a consideration. YMMV.

+1

I love the rifle scabbard, but that's about where my enthusiasm ends.

I've been using one for several years. I love it for carying a rifle, optics and rain gear but that's about it. The empty pack is heavy too.

I like my old style J1 but it is heavy. I'm not using mine to pack in a camp, usually just my day gear then meat out. It works fine for that-at least for me.

If I carried more gear for greater distances I'd look elsewhere.

What would be a good pack to look at that carries heavier weight and also a rifle?

I used the dragonfly for years. It is a little heavy, the straps could use a little padding but over all it was a good pack.

Damn that's one hell of a way to get a buck out of the woods. How much did it weigh.

The deer? Not much, that's a coues deer. I'd guess 75# as it sits there, maybe less. The problem with that hike out was I had aaaaalllllll my gear with me, minus my glassing stool. Because of that, I wasn't able to get the deer inside the pack and the weight was constantly pulling st my back, shoulders and hips because it felt so far away from me.

I've used a J34 (Just One) pack for the past 4 years and in my opinion, it is one of the most versatile pack I've ever used. At just over 7 lbs unloaded, it is a bit heavy but balances nicely with a load. I'm an older hunter and It can comfortably carry as much weight as I am capable of shouldering. I did a backpack hunt in CO 3 years ago and the pack weighed just over 60 lbs. I also have a Kafaru Longhunter standard and the load lifters on it are better than those on the J34 but I use the J34 more because of it's layout. Just my opinion but, I've looked at a couple of the new Eberlestocks (smaller daypacks) and I certainly don't agree that they are "polyester junk".

I have a Just One (or is it a 108) I used in '08 for 13 days (never saw blood as I shot my caribou just outside camp) and has been inside the closet ever since. I don't know what to ask for it. But I will gladly post in the Classifieds if someone can tell me what a fair price for it is.

Quality seems good. Features ... kinda of personal. What matters to me might not to you and vice versa.

The only Eberlestock pack I've owned is the H3 - Sawed Off which I got over the summer. What it does well is pack a 3L hydration bladder, small filter, bug jacket, flashlight, and some "mountain money". It does that with a fairly high, narrow profile that doesn't interfere with carrying, or accessing, a handgun on my pants belt. Perfect for the niche. It's also a pretty good stream-side fishing pack.

Other jobs, other packs. It's not a meat hauler.
