Looking to buy a second tier barrel to build a truck gun. Any barrel places out there that don't want $3-$400 for a barrel? Need a 338 barrel. powdr

Try ER Shaw. They will do it for you in that range.

Brownells sells a barrel for Mauser Large Ring that has a long enough straight shank to lop the threads off and rethread if you are not using a Mauser action. Cost is less than $85, and the things shoot pretty darn good. Caliber selection is limited to 25-06, 30-06, 6.5x55, and .308.

I picked up a 24" .25-06 barrel for $135, from Midway I think, and had it rechamber to .257 Weatherby. It was a consistent 1 1/16" for six shots at 100 yards.

I look for a good take off. A well chambered factory barrel will likely shoot pretty darn good.

There are some new, take-off, Weatherby Mark V barrels in 338-06 currently on eBay for around $100. If there is enough shank to rework for your action, that would be a place to look. The seller is loneoaktrading and the ad shows that he has 16 of them for sale.

You might also check the auction sites.

I prefer classic.

I have read really good things and some friends are using X-caliber barrels say they are top notch. Blanks start at $150 I believe, but you can get them finished from the store too.
I am looking for my first aftermarket bbl and X-caliber is what I will get for a Savage

Great guy to deal with. I bought a 30/06, cut it off. Gunsmith and made a nice shooting 308 for a Rem 700. These 30 cal barrels are 4 groove.

ER Shaw

Shaw Contours 1 thru 5, chambered and threaded for your action
4140 Chrome Moly Steel $180 416 Stainless Steel $255

Contoured Blank, 4140 Chrome Moly Steel $150

Seems pretty reasonable to me.

Powdr

Haven't used them in a while, so can't say but might give them a call.

I bought a blank from Green Mountain a couple years ago for $95. Haven't had a chance to spin it onto anything yet so don't know how it shoots.
