My buddy just dropped off a couple of rifles to me that he wants to sell (his father's estate). They are older 700 BDLs; one in .222 and the other in 22-250. Based on date codes, the 222 is circa 1965 and the 22-250 is 1981.

The 222 has rolled checkering and no jeweling on bolt. The 22-250 has typical poly finish and honking open sights. I forgot about rifles with sights and didn't know they originally came with rolled checkering.

I had a .222 from that period, very nice rifle! Are you selling them over the fire?

Dennisinaz: Is the 222 Remington a heavy barrel model or a sporter weight model?
I would be a "playah" for the 222 if indeed it is a heavy barrel.
TIA for clarification on that point.
Rifles from that era are known for their accuracy.
Personally I did not like the "rolled on" pattern checkering of that short era but again I am impressed with the accuracy of the Model 700's of those vintages.

The 222 may have the flat safety

First centerfire was a '80 22-250 BDL Custom Deluxe. Gots the good trigger, d&t for receiver sight and Cold War apocalypse proof poly finish. Amazing that things could be killed with such slow twist archaic contraptions.

No, not selling them here. I thought I was going to buy them both initially but decided that I don't need anymore small calibers right now. The fit and finish on these rifles is better than what I am currently seeing.

The .222 is a sporter as is the 22-250. I have a couple of friends that I think want them so not going to need to advertise.

The rolled checkering lasted into the 70's. I had a .17 Remington BDL with it.

My buddy took the .222, nobody wanted the 22-250 because it had a cheesy scope on it. Surprised me as it was the nicest of the two. It must have been a safe queen as it didn't even look handled. Too bad they don't take that much care making them these days!

I've got a weakness for old 700's. Locking bolts and button rifled barrels.

That locking bolt is an easy fix. Converted one this week for a friend.

Converted which way? Heard if guys milling the slot on bolt body and using old style safety lever.

What was the twist on those rifles? I have a 1970 223 that had a 1 in 14 barrel.

Just cut the bolt locking extension on the safety. Quick job with a Dremel cut off wheel. Grind smooth and reinstall safety. Maybe 10 minuets at most.

Converted to not lock the bolt.

I like to load and unload on safety.

I don't see much need for a bolt lock. I guess if someone was slipping thru the brush, hunting DG, that would be good. For my use, I like loading and unloading on safety, don't worry about the bolt handle coming up. If it does, I just push it back down.
