I have several old Vari X III and they are what Leupold built their reputation on. They are rock solid and very tough and Lifetime guarantee. The glass is supposed to be better on new VX-3. If you buy one you will buy more.. Good shooting

I think it's because of the confusion created by Leopold in its labeling through the years. I think the general everyday hunting public doesn't know the difference between a Vari X III, a VX III or a VX 3. Heck, unless your dealing with "loonies" like those of us who regularly utilize forums like this one, if you see one listed for sale, most guys use the nomenclatures/designations interchangeably. When someone on the local craigslist lists it one way, you have a 1 in 3 shot that they identified it correctly in their own ad.

There are even three generations within the old Vari-X III designation. Combined with the nomenclature situation, this could be the source of a lot of "a VX-3 isn't even close to a Conquest" type comments.

I have several of the VariXIII's and even a II that I haven't broken yet, so they stay in use. One went back for repair shortly after I bought it, but has been fine since then.
My last scope purchase was a Steiner Military and I've been impressed with it. It seems clearer and better light gathering at dusk, but why throw out a decent scope?
Maybe I should sell off the "classics" and spend the extra money on different scopes. Anybody try a Tract Toric? I hear they're the new Leupold contender!

Arky65: The answer to the question in your posts heading is: because they are worth it! Last weekend at the Missoula, Montana gunshow I bought a Leupold 12 power Rifle scope with a "U" pre-fix serial number. The "U" pre-fix" designates the scope was made by Leupold in 1987. I bought it for a friend of mine who has been looking for one of these for some time now. I (he) gladly paid more for this scope than it cost when it was new! After describing the scope and the price the seller was asking my friend over the cell phone replied, "DON'T let it get away"! He already has it mounted up and is happy as a clam with it. Leupold scopes, including the older manufactured ones are a GOOD investment of ones monies. Period. Hold into the wind VarmintGuy
