Has or does anybody on here load hard cast 180s in .38 special cases? I'm wanting a penetrating load for a 357 chambered 3" S&W model 60. I load and shoot the Cast Performance 180 grainers in 357 cases for my 586 and Marlin. But would like a milder recoiling load for the j-frame. I'm looking for light/managable recoil with the best penetration I can get.

Thanks

My gay cousin loads them, I'll check with him.

I live and recreate in an area with a lot of bears. This is the gun my wife is most comfortable with. She's not a large woman, hence the light recoil. FWIW I have shot full house 180s out of it and it sucked. Really bad.

I'd HONESTLY load 158gr SWC's with 4.5 to 5 grains of Unique and call it a day (or a 160gr WFN)

Right now I'm keeping it loaded with 148 gr hard cast wadcutters over 7 grains of Unique.

I saw the 160ers on Cast Performance website. Might be uber

I've been loading 170 gr Keith style from Western Bullet Co, in 38 Spl cases. 5-6 gr of Unique, 950-1000 fps give or take from the 4" Security Six.

Easy shooting in the Security Six, it's a 33-oz. revolver.

Hey man things are great. Been busting my hump with the new place getting a bunch of [bleep] done, but I've got my hay up, firewood stacked, and now just a pile of poles and posts to cut, peel, and cobble together in some semblance of a fence. I've a really nice black bear I've seen a couple times within a mile or 2 of the place and I'm hoping to poke a hole in him this fall. Griz in the immediate area, but I've not seen any myself yet. Betting once my fruit trees and berry bushes get going I'll have some around, if the chickens don't do the trick. wink

Aaah, yes I'd forgotten. Last time you posted about this load I took a mental note, but have had a few drinks since then. Thanks!

I've loaded 180s (and the 170 Lyman 358429) in my SP101. 800-X was magic and put the hurt on our showshoe bunnies. (I had to put two 200 grainers...cast.. from my 358 Winchester into one bunny a few years ago in spite of drilling him through the head with the first. I don't know if perhaps our rabbits are incredibly tough, or if they're just that dumb. smirk )

I have used a true Keith 173 grain as cast from heat treated wheel weights in a .38 Special over a .38 Special book load of Red Dot. One of the most satisfactory loads ever.

I'd seriously consider Mag-Na-Porting the existing pistol or shopping for a factory ported on the J-frame.

There was a nice factory J-frame with adjustable sights and Magna-Ported in .357 Magnum called the Small Hunter as I recall. The J-frame factory comped in .356 TSW was a really annoying noise maker. Prices on the factory ported J-frame in .327 Federal are for collectors not users but I'd spend the money for my own wife if she were still alive.

I understand what you are saying, and appreciate the input.

But I'm totally against breaks. Whether it be rifles or handguns, I find them horrendously obnoxious. This particular gun as it sits is one of my favorites. If I ever find a good deal on another I'll snag it to be sure.

For 2 legged vermin it gets loaded with +p 125 Rem SJHP or the 135 GoldDots, and she does well with those. And for field carry the aforementioned load with the hard wadcutters is very kind shooting as well.
