Thinking of doing a one-gun-safari with the W70 .375H&H- plains game and buffalo, maybe a leopard. What kind of trigger pull do you guys use for this setup?

Is it customary to set a dangerous game rifle to a higher pull weight than a "deer" rifle?

All my center fire hunting tifles are set to 4 pounds.
These are .243, 7mm-308,.308,7mm Weatherby, .338, .357, 405 and .458.
This reduces accidental misses and this was done after a hard trigger pul was at least part of the reason for misses.

A rifle with substancial recoil needs to be held firmly and if hunting DG a 4# trigger pull would be about as light as I would recommend. But complete familiarity with your rifle is the single most important item.

Thanks, I believe I'll go with 4# then. My deer rifles are set to 2.5# but my smith wanted to know if I wanted a higher pull weight for the .375. It came about 6.5# from the factory and that's how I've been shooting it the last few years.

I think it is a good idea to have the same pull for all rifles except maybe prairie dog guns.
I would have the gunsmith make everything four lbs.

I like to do my hunting BEFORE I pull the trigger!

I try for the same pull weights on most of my rifles, but some are 2.5 to slightly over 3 lbs on most. Ideally, I like 3 lbs on all.

You can have the best of both worlds. I have a CZ 550 Safari Magnum in 458 Lott that has a set trigger. If you don't want a light trigger, don't use the set function and if you want it use it. I've not measured how many pounds the set trigger is but I'm sure it's quite a bit less than 4 lbs.

All of my rifles have a 2.5 pound trigger pull. I don't see any reason to change things up. As Phil said, "familiarity" is key.. wink

Ha ha.... I don't know if the OP is going to be shooting leopards in the winter time. I also wonder how cold it gets in Africa in the winter. I guess if wearing gloves, I can see the need for a slightly heavier pull wt..

A rifle with heavy recoil is normally held quite with quite a bit more force than a rifle with lighter recoil and in my experience having a heavier trigger pull is not at all noticible and there is less chance of an unintended discharge.

I have my DG rifles set the same, all are at 3.5lbs.
My deer rifles are a 1lb lighter, and my varmint rifle are another 1lb lighter again.
My target rifles are another story.
The best thing ANYONE can do, no matter what poundage you have the trigger set at, is to sit watching tv a few nights before your hunt, familiarizing yourself with the rifle by dry firing and operating the bolt, empty of course!

Cheers.

My 375 Ruger Hawkeye is set at 3 lb. I find it to be an ideal weight for me.

My 30-06s came from the factory set at three pounds and a quarter, but they had no creep and broke so crisply with no over travel that I never saw the need to change them. My 300 WM breaks nicely at three pounds. My Ruger no. One in 405 Win breaks at 4 pounds and shoots pretty good. My TIKKA T3 in 6.5 Swede breaks like glass at 2.5. That's where she stays. To me, crisp and clean Trump's pull weight.
