I told them time and again they couldn't use that picture of me.

I was 1 year and 1 month old when that came out! thats what a Sporting Magazine should be like not the ones they are trying to sell Today!

I was a 12 year old boy on a farm in Northern Minnesota. Outdoor Life and Sports AField were staples. This issue was probably in the attic when we sold the farm in '79.

So what did Jack have to say about Grizzlies? I know he loved the .270, but certainly not on those critters.

Looks like gnoahhh is packin' a 99F in that picture. Am I wrong?

"As I count up, I can remember shooting eight grizzlies, helping to shoot two, and being in on the death of two others. I have shot or helped to shoot eight with a .30/06, one with a .270 Winchester and one with a .300 Weatherby Magnum. Of the two I saw killed, one was downed with a .270 and one with a .300 H&H Magnum. Both of the allied Alaska brown bears I have killed were taken with a .375 H&H Magnum. Of all these bears, only three were killed stone dead in their tracks-one with a 130 grain Silvertip bullet from a .270, one with a 180 grain silvertip from a standard .300 H&H, and the other with a 180 grain Remington Bronze Point from a .300 Weatherby. Another grizzlye (a large male) was hit twice with the tine 41 grain bullet from a 22-250. The first shot blew up on a rib. The second slipped between two ribs and killed the bear in its tracks."

He later states: "My own notion is that .30-06 is enough for grizzly, but if anyone is happier with a .375 he should use it."

According to the CPI inflation calculator that 99-F would be just shy of $1000 today.

Ol' Jack was quite the stunt shooter dropping that 'Griz' with a 22-250.

According to one source the median wage (half the country made more and the other half made less) in 1959 was 3,855.00, which converts to about 27,000.00 in 2016 dollars. Another source states about 5K in 59 converting to about 32K in 2016 bucks. 1K is a much larger chunk of those numbers than it would be on the median wage earner (as adjusted from those amounts) today. According to another single source, the median wage today is a little under 54K. Buying power is better today. As tough as it is to sell sporting firearms in today's market, it must have been a real bear back then.

PS - the conversion I used calculated 120-bucks from 1959 to be about 770-bucks for today.

People watched their money better then than they do now. They made a cup of coffee at home for a few cents as opposed to going to Starbucks and spending multiple bucks. If they wanted a new rifle they saved up til they could afford it. That's the year I saved money from my meager Summer job wages and put a new Weaver K3 on my 99EG. Just my 2 cents. David

No the EG and Weaver K3 with range finder reticle went down the road shortly before I went on active duty in the Navy. If you've looked at my profile you'll notice I was in the Marine Corps at one time also. It's a long story.
Unfortunately I had the EG D&T'd for the scope. I used a top mount Pachmyer so I could pivot the scope in low light. The first day I hunted with it I killed a deer after sundown and realized I didn't need to use the iron sights ever. I wish I still had it but when you're young....
