In a nostalgic move, no less, I have a 1967 Black Hawk Short Hornet to hunt with this year. The arrows are period fiberglass Bear Kodiak Supreme and Microflite, along with Bear Razorheads...1964 issue. Us old farts do these kind of things now and then. The bow shoots great by the way, and it was made in East McKeesport, Pa., just a hundred miles west of where I live. Cool.

That's pretty classy and well maintained to still have enough spring in her step!
Good luck with that!

I remember those! Live about 10 miles from East McKeesport, they were pretty popular bows back in the day. Shot my first deer with a recurve in 1970 up near Sigel. It was considered to be a pretty big deal to get one with a bow back then. I think PA legalized compounds in 1973? Anyone remember?

Ross, do you remember the name of the guy who shot all those big bucks with a bow back then? He was a McKeesport boy and now makes his own Deer scents. Many of them where shot close to where I now live.
Addition: Just came to me, Bob Kerschner.

Very nice set-up. I hope to take my first with the recurve this year. I started with a compound, shot some deer and moose, then went to fingers/compound, now at it with the recurve.
Never heard of Black Hawk, so will have to keep an eye out for them.

Tom, they haven't been made since the late 70's. They do show up on Ebay frequently though.

I shot my first buck with a Bear Kodiak in 1970 as well using feather-fletched cedar arrows with Bear Razorheads. We did all of our hunting on the ground then and hardly anyone used a sight on their bow. My wife sewed my first camo suit out of woodland camo cloth. It was 1973 when the compound was legalized. Wow have things changed!

I still hunt from the ground, I quit using tree stands in the 1980's. That's a big part of the challenge to me personally and I feel a lot safer knowing at my age a fall from the ground is better than one from in the air somewhere. I still take a deer about every third year and am happy with that. I'm due this year...by the way. 8^)

Every year I hunt more from the ground. Its just more relaxing and feel free knowing I can set-up on any fresh sign I see, instead of lugging a stand. Havent connected yet from the ground but came very close on a large buck I ended up taking in rifle season last year. Hopefully this year.

I still have my Bear Kodiak Magnum. I'll have to follow suit and get it out hunting again. I remember using a pencil sharpener on my father's cedar arrows, while he was gluing on the Razorheads.

I have that very set-up. Except it's a LH & 43lb draw weight. I'm from Clairton, grew up chasing PA whitetails in the early 70's.

Hey Bob. I've lived in Bedford County since 1964, prior to that near Carlisle.

And, IIRC, we were only allowed 1 deer for the season...buck or doe (with doe tag for your county)...in the '60's. There were no bonus tags.

Toxalot----We use to hunt deer on a farm near New Enterprise. Lots of good memories in Bedford Cty.
