My 12 year old son drew a 501 cow tag and was wondering if anybody could help with a general idea where to start in the area. I'm not asking for your honey hole just any info about the area would be helpful. I'm not new or elk hunting I just don't know much about the unit. Thanks in advance

Drive North of Taryall Reservoir then turn East on FS road 844.( Several miles) There are many open parks and trails to watch for Elk moving off of Mt. Evans. I have taken many Elk out of this area. You will even see some with tracking collars. Have a good hunt.

Coming off Mt. Evans? That's a pretty good haul from Tarryall.

Quite the opposite, Mt Evans is not far to the Northeast. Across US 285. Small hike for the winter migrating Elk heard

Tracking collars show they were tagged on Mt. Evans.

On my map, it's 20 miles or more. With lots of other good winter range in between. Elk may migrate to Tarryall from the Mt. Evans area, but I wouldn't advise anyone to set up near Tarryall and look for elk coming off Mt. Evans. Mainly because I wouldn't know what an elk coming from Mt. Evans would look like.

I shot a cow elk in 501 in 1991. She had a tracking collar and when I tuned it in to DOW they say she was tagged on Mt Evans and that they move to the Tarryall area for winter ground. 20 miles is nothing for Elk migration.

Check the migration movement of the Bears Ears heard from Long Mountain at Slater Creek to the Godiva Rim Northwest of Maybell. Almost 60 miles. When they cross Hwy 13 North of Craig the DOW has to close the Hwy. You can find the pictures on their website.

I don't doubt it. I just don't agree with the advice to hunt open areas for elk coming off a mountain 20+ miles away.

Especially since the OP didn't specify the timing of the hunt.

I would start off on Kenosha pass. They close the roads there and the elk are in there. Sometimes up high but usually in the aspens and timber
