So now that I am back to work, I want to buy a new toy (want not need).
I have narrowed the search down to the new Colt competition model. They chamber it in 9 mm, I am thinking that combo would be good for da wife to learn on (hehe). What's the recoil like on the 1911/9 combo. By the way she kind of like the feel of the 1911.
Thoughts.

I saw a Ruger 9mm/1911 the other day, aluminum frame, and a SA with steel frame. Actually not a bad idea as the cost of practice ammo is a bit less.

In a full size 1911, with 115gr ball ammo, I found the recoil to be very mild. More than a 22 but less than a 9mm Glock, for instance. Also, retracting the slide was very easy due to the light recoil spring. My wife really liked my Kimber 9mm Target 1911 for that reason.

The last 9mm I owned on the 1911 Government frame was a Springfield Armory Range Officer. I enjoyed shooting it a great deal and only sold it after I let a friend shoot it and he bugged me till I made him a price.
Recoil was completely negligible. Accuracy was good, and of course holsters abound. I went with Wilson Combat mags and never had a bobble.
Good luck, whichever route you take. CT

I have a Springfield Range Officer in 9mm that has become my favorite shooter. I use 4.0 gr. of Bullseye behind a 125 Frontier plated bullet for plinking, USPSA, and Steel Challenge. Very accurate and easy shooting.

I thought of the Springfield, but I want Colt. The Springer is my second choice.

I've shot a few and they're an absolute hoot. Negligible recoil, great accuracy and a great trigger (or can be great). What more could you want?
Dawson magazines run great.

Picked up a Springfield loaded 9mm and it shoots great with very little recoil, and cheap to shoot!

Are the 1911's rated for +p or +p+, not that I have any of the later but gives me an idea of durability.

I bought a Ruger 1911 this past weekend and am really impressed. I have put about 300 rounds thru it without a bobble. This included a mix of 115 fmj, hard cast flatnose reloads and some golden saber hollowpoints. No feeding problems at all and recoil very manageable.

Back in the ammo shortage days, I took my CHL course. There was a fine middle aged lady that took the course too. She had one it was nothing but trouble, or so everyone thought. She ended up using something else to shoot.
Well after the shooting, the instructor was looking it over, and the ammo that she had. Here some bastid at a gun store in Austin put a few 9x18 rounds in the box to make a full box.. mix and match.

Have you thought about a Browning Hi-Power? I have a BHP and a 70 Series Colt Commander in 9mm. I like both guns, but the BHP is a little more accurate and fits my hand better.

You can also fire 38 Super in a Colt/Government Model 9MM, you need a new barrel and magazine. I have a BHP, its feel is a bit different.
