I'm not going to pretend to have alot of experience with spotters, I have owned a few (Fieldscope EDiii, Kowa 664, first gen non-HD Vanguard) but when I owned them I understood little about optics.

All of those scopes were straight designs because that's where the best deals were. Needless to say I kept moving them along only to buy another great deal, don't worry, this time you'll get used to the straight eyepiece....

Anyway, it was time to buy am angled spotter that I was going to be happy with and keep!

The 601 bodies popped up last week from a couple of sources for $259, another $275 for a Kowa zoom eyepiece and I was in business.

I had my first look through it tonight and from my limited experience this may be the best value on the market. I had myself convinced that without ED glass I would be blinded by bright rainbows fringing every object i looked at. Wrong, even high contrast objects show very little to no color fringing (there is a white PVC vent pipe sticking out of a black roof a couple houses over, is this a proper though small CA test?) I'm not sure how and i don't have the 664 here to test side by side but I dare to say the resolution is almost equal. I'm sure early and late this 60mm spotter could show where it falls behind but this evening it may have shown me the most comfortable, easy, view of those I've owned.

Couple these attributes with its minimal size and weight (I haven't weighed or measured yet for exact numbers but it is light), surprisingly solid feel for a poly body and this may be one of the best buys on the market for a hunter or shooter on a budget.

Nick
