I know nothing of lever guns. Haven't hunted with one since I was 10 years old. I had been wanting a 336 in 35 but did not want a new one with a safety. I bought one locally today. Far as I can tell it's never been fired. Bluing and stock are 98%. It is marked the Marlin firearms co, New haven, Connecticut USA I got the rifle and 2 boxes of ammo. 150g core locks, and a box of 200g lever revolution. 400.00

So tell me. Did I get a good one? I'm sitting in the woods now with it laying across my lap waiting on a doe lol.

I think that you did well.

A 336 with a Leupold 2-7x33 up top makes a great woods deer rifle.

I like the light transmission benefit of a rifle scope and, for me, the 2-7x33 VX-1 shotgun scope with a heavy duplex reticle is the preferred 336 sight.

260- I'm considering sending it off after gun season is over and having it cerakoted in maybe a matte black or a tungsten gray.....then adding some sort of different sight.....not sure I could ever warm up to scoping it though. We will see

Thanks G5!

I broke out my 1960 336SC (for some reason, knowing the "born date" on Marlins seems to be the thing), this year, and potted a doe with it. Mine's a .30/30, short magazine, sporting carbine. It handles pretty nicely, though it's a little light in the nose.

I put an old Leupold M8-4X on it, and the doe co-operated, at no more than 100 yards out. She bolted and ran downhill about 40 yards before tipping over. Nice blood trail, though.

Don't be scared to scope it, though, it sure made the difference between making meat and making tree-limb salad.

I think I'd plink with the 150s and use 200s for hunting, based on the performance of 150gr. Power Points I used in the .30/30. I did NOT get full penetration on the front shoulder, and in fact just broke the one shoulder, the bullet went to hell quick. She died without causing me any grief, but I'd rather have had two holes leaking rather than one.

I put a Williams rear and a XS front on mine.
Front needed more height, and XS makes one with a narrow white stripe up it. Helps in poor lighting, and seems to tighten things up in general.

If a doe comes by and you kill it, you got a good one
