It's that time. It's a southern thing.

Search didn't turn up anything.

Recipes? I like them not crunchy but not mushy also. And not too salty.

Simple as can be.

Get a big pot and boil them to your desired consistency. That's it. Some nuts take longer, over night even, while fresher nuts may be ready in a few hours. Salt isn't to tricky as it isn't difficult to add more and it doesn't take too long for the salt to be absorbed by the nut. Taste your water before you put the nuts in.

I've also had good ones out of a crock pot, if you don't want to fire up a big ol pot on a burner.

Hardest part of it out here in the PNW is getting raw peanuts.

Although salted water makes wonderful boiled peanuts add some Tony Chachere's or Old Bay for a different taste.

Peanuts are pretty much like dried beans and I know we've had some discussions and disagreements about those. Regardless:

-Definitely better off starting with raw/green peanuts. Find them at a southern grocer like Food Lion. Roasted will work as well but...

-Give them a good overnight soak.

-Do not add salt until the last 30 minutes of cooking and then let them salt soak as long as you can. Use kosher sea salt.

-My favorite cook setup is a camp chef propane stove and either a stock pot or hollowed out beer keg.

From there you can add Tony's, Franks or pretty much any creole or hot additives you want. Down this way we pretty much stick with salt and clean water. Which BTW do not reuse boiled peanut water. I will not buy peanuts from a local vendor unless I know him because some just keep adding peanuts to the same water. You've heard of Montezuma's revenge right?

These are the basics that I've used for the past 20 years at the beach and camp. First thing I do is get the peanuts going!! They definitely go a long way.

Tried them for the first time earlier this year. A friend with southern roots brought some over for the wife and I to try.

I can't believe that people really eat them. Tasted like salty goo.

In Alabama where I was born (Early on a frosty morn ... wink ), boiled peanuts are called "Snot-in-a-shell.." grin

Boiled a mess last night. Turned out pretty good. Just right on the salt. Ended up boiling about 3 hrs and soaked another hr.

Got some going now with crab boil.

growing up we always ate parched peanuts from the ones we grew in our garden.

later in life i was introduced to the boilt ones. now, i always soak them overnite before boiling. and often add hot sauce, cayenne flakes, or even chopped up jalapenos seeds and all to the water. adds a ton of flavor.

the doc says that with my high blood pressure, sodium is not such a good thing.

Had to google what that was. And still not sure if it compares.

To eat you put the shell in your mouth. Crack it, suck the juice, then eat the nuts.

a huge favorite around here. Several road side vendors around town, so I usually just stop and buy a bag full, rather than buy and cook the raw ones. Oh, be prepared to boil them for hours and hours. And hours. smile
Simple as can be, as others have said. Boil the green peanuts in salted water until they are soft. Damn, I can eat 'em by the gallon.
I like to wash them down with a cold beer, but an RC Cola or a Coke works well too.

Bought a can in Walmart out of curiosity, I agree with the analogy of "snot in a shell". Must be an acquired taste, a southern thing perhaps.

just to be fair, i don't find the canned ones in the same league as the boiled at home ones. it's a knack to get them just right.

i didn't eat any until the second half of life. had heard of them, but nobody ate the boiled ones in our neighborhood growing up.

Love me some goober peas Hoop! Those bags you sent me were bawled with a ham hock, jalapenos and Old Bay. Three of us ate both bags in one football game. The fumes however got rather toxic! From us, not the paynuts.

nothing compares to food cooked fresh.

with that said, it should be outlawed to produce canned boiled goobers.

cook 'em fresh or they ain't worth having around for hurricane supplies.

fiddler farms in silverhill, alabama produces some of the best jumbo peanuts to be had. you can buy them green, boiled or roasted. they even sell the culls for deer food (deer crack).

one can only feel sorry for those folks, not born and raised in the South. It's sad to hear any one call a boiled peanut "snot in a shell". Just sad. smile

Or 2 tablespoons of liquid crab boil along with a good dash of Kosher salt. Let soak until cool.
