I'm looking for the name of the flat, steel piece that slides down below the frame when the lever is opened. The same piece slides back into the action when the lever is closed.

Any help will be appreciated.

Are you talking about the falling block? That is called the breech block.

That sounds reasonable to me. I tried to read a schematic, but I just can't enlarge it sufficiently for these old eyed to discern.
