OK I read this and it reads like you are looking at either a 25-06 or 270 in a Dakota 10. That can't be right if the 270 is $2K higher. So what kind of rifle is the 25-06? If they are both the same model rifle, why in the world is the 270 more expensive??
Those who must raise their voice to get their point across are generally not intelligent enough to do so in any other way.

Sounds like a LOT of money for a WI deer rifle.
How about a 700 chambered in 7-08 with a 3x9 Leupold?
Don't underestimate the 7-08 for western deer and antelope and more.

I've killed 2 bull elk with my T3 7mm-08, 140 Partitions. One shot each, DRT. My dad killed a big bull last year with his T3 7mm-08, 140 Accubond, one shot, went 30 yards and tipped over. Not to mention all the mule deer, none needed more than one shot. P

The Dakota M 10 .270 Win. Or is it a 270 Dakota? I don't think there is a Dakota 270 Cartridge, think they start at 7MM? I sure could be wrong on that though, they do not list one on their web page. I have a couple of Model 10's they are a joy to carry and shoot. Both are very accurate. Buy them both!

Not sure why the 270 is 2K more, but I'd take the 270 win over a 25-06 every day of the week and twice on Sunday.
Nothing wrong with a 7mm-08.
YMMV

If they are both the same model rifle, why in the world is the 270 more expensive?? Any number of options on that particular rifle that could increase the price. Higher grade wood, various finish options, metal but plate / grip cap, special checkering or engraving, etc. Things you don't find on a factory Remington M700.

Currently without a Wisconsin deer gun. How does this happen? If I had to have a Dakota 10, I'd go 270.

YMMV I'm indifferent to either cartridge as they are both fine for deer hunting and a lot more, but in this case, the .25-06 hands down for $2000 less and money for a nice scope, ammunition and still plenty left over for other hunting expenses. But then, I probably wouldn't even look at either of these rifles in the first place for this purpose.

IMHO a good 270 bolt action with your choice of 130gr bullet is as close to perfect as a deer rifle gets.
If I HAD to drop that kind of coin, the closest I can think of would be a Sako 85 Deluxe(.270) with a 6x42 Schmidt & Bender on it. Never owned either...but I'd like to.

The difference between 2 basic rifles is $2k? For deer the 25-06 should work fine.

A 120 grain bullet in a 25-06 is very similar to a 130 grain bullet in a 270. If you need a heavier bullet you might need a 270. I have two of each. (270 & a 25-06)
For $20 more I might get the 270. But probably not. $2,000 NO WAY!

It will get the job done, just as well (ore better) as the rifles you mention....

I would never dream of ruining a perfectly good 7mm, myself. Figured since $2K more, it may be a custom/wildcat, since he never actually stated .270 Win........

Wish Brian would show up and clear up the ambiguity in his post.
If there's a 25-06 Dakota Model 10 out there for 2K less than one in 270, I want to know where.

Currently without a Wisconsin deer gun. tree stand and still hunting. what would you do? thanks Had a really nice Ruger #1 in .280 Rem I bought used. Problem was it was ‘too nice’. While I used it in good weather on a couple of antelope huts, I couldn’t bring myself to take it on elk/deer hunts. I finally sold it to fund a new Ruger Scout in .308 Win. Much as I liked the #1, I figure I came out ahead in the deal as the Scout, which came in a laminate stock, now has Ruger’s synthetic stock and suits my needs much better. The Dakotas are beautiful rifles and if they turn your crank and money isn’t the issue, you should get one. Or both. If it were me and I was looking for a “deer rifle”, a .270 would be hard to beat. For the same reasons I sold the #1, though, I wouldn’t buy a Dakota. I keep thinking about my then-new Remington M700 and its first elk hunt. After three falls on a talus slope it had dings in the barrel, action, scope and stock. For me a Dakota would be a safe queen and I don’t keep those.

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.
A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.

I would not be interested in a dakota 10 in either if the wood was plain... I ended up buying a .260 Low wall but I did spend some time online shopping for the "right" Model 10...
If you are flexible about the chambering there are good deals to be had on Model 10s that have the kind of beautiful wood that rifle loonie dreams are made of....

I may personally like the 270 better. I won't make a recommendation about which you didn't ask, which seems to be standard procedure anymore. The differences between the 25/06 and 270 are so insignificant that the differences between the same rifle prices ($2K more), makes this decision a no-brainer for me. I have 3 270s in various configurations. If you were to offer me those same configurations in 25/06 plus $1,000 (probably even less) in trade, I would be the newest and happiest quarter bore fan in the world and you would have three 270s and $3,000 less money in your pocket.
