the opportunity has arisen to get a 25/06 or a 270 Dakota 10. the catch? they are both basic rifles and the 270 is $2k more. Currently without a Wisconsin deer gun. tree stand and still hunting. what would you do? thanks

OK I read this and it reads like you are looking at either a 25-06 or 270 in a Dakota 10. That can't be right if the 270 is $2K higher. So what kind of rifle is the 25-06? If they are both the same model rifle, why in the world is the 270 more expensive??

Sounds like a LOT of money for a WI deer rifle.

How about a 700 chambered in 7-08 with a 3x9 Leupold?

Don't underestimate the 7-08 for western deer and antelope and more.

I've killed 2 bull elk with my T3 7mm-08, 140 Partitions. One shot each, DRT. My dad killed a big bull last year with his T3 7mm-08, 140 Accubond, one shot, went 30 yards and tipped over. Not to mention all the mule deer, none needed more than one shot.

I don't think there is a Dakota 270 Cartridge, think they start at 7MM? I sure could be wrong on that though, they do not list one on their web page.

I have a couple of Model 10's they are a joy to carry and shoot. Both are very accurate. Buy them both!

Not sure why the 270 is 2K more, but I'd take the 270 win over a 25-06 every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Any number of options on that particular rifle that could increase the price. Higher grade wood, various finish options, metal but plate / grip cap, special checkering or engraving, etc. Things you don't find on a factory Remington M700.

Get a 30/06.

If I had to have a Dakota 10, I'd go 270.

I'm indifferent to either cartridge as they are both fine for deer hunting and a lot more, but in this case, the .25-06 hands down for $2000 less and money for a nice scope, ammunition and still plenty left over for other hunting expenses. But then, I probably wouldn't even look at either of these rifles in the first place for this purpose.

IMHO a good 270 bolt action with your choice of 130gr bullet is as close to perfect as a deer rifle gets.

If I HAD to drop that kind of coin, the closest I can think of would be a Sako 85 Deluxe(.270) with a 6x42 Schmidt & Bender on it. Never owned either...but I'd like to.

The difference between 2 basic rifles is $2k? For deer the 25-06 should work fine.

A 120 grain bullet in a 25-06 is very similar to a 130 grain bullet in a 270. If you need a heavier bullet you might need a 270. I have two of each. (270 & a 25-06)

For $20 more I might get the 270. But probably not. $2,000 NO WAY!
