I am waiting on a Silencerco Harvester to arrive and I am looking at rifles to put it on.
For those who hunt suppressed, what length barrel do you suggest? I don't want to give up a lot of velocity so I am thinking 308win with a 20-22 inch barrel.

For suppressed use, I'd go as short as you can without giving up the effectiveness of the cartridge. A 20" or 22" 308 would be fine and not give up much velocity. I wouldn't go shorter than 18" though.

Whatever barrel length is suited to the situation without the suppressor. Unless you are hunting somewhere that may cause a hangup with the can attached I wouldn't worry about it. If the extra length does pose a problem consider attaching it when you get to wherever it is you're going. One word about that is, if it's cold, dark, and you're wearing gloves it can be entertaining to screw on a can.

The only time I have had to think about it much is in tight woods and the rifle is shouldered or in competitions where a barricade may be contacted. In both situations I just adapted.

The Harvester is a great hunting can, use it on everything within its rating and with a barrel profile large enough to be threaded for it.

That brings up a good point I am considering a Tikka lite and having it threaded, I think the barrel is about .630. Does anyone know what the minimum needed to thread for a can without any type of adapter is?

Depends on the thread size. 5/8"-24 won't work on your barrel, but 9/16"24 will have just enough shoulder to be correct. That's fairly common for hunting rifle barrel profiles.

9/16-24 or even 1/2-28 will work. Both also have 5/8-24 adapters available.

My Tikka .243 is threaded 1/2-28 at the factory 22" length and I use a Gemtech 5/8-24 adapter for my Omega. Works great.

The Silencerco Harvester is designed to put different threaded collars on it so you can get the correct one for your barrel.

I was told the suppressor needs a shoulder to seal. So I am wanting enough barrel so I don't need an adapter, only the threaded insert.

I borrowed my son-in-law's Kimber 84 .308 for this year since my rifle is waiting for a new barrel. Its barrel is 18" and gets 2,775 feet per second average for the 155 grain bullets. The powder is IMR3031.

.700 is about as small as you can go for 5/8x24 threads and still have a shoulder to snug up to.

Adapters for this purpose have a shoulder on them as they are designed specifically for use with suppressors and other muzzle devices. You may be able to get by with a different thread pitch but I would be wary about threading too close to the bore. It all depends on your finished barrel diameter.

I went with a Remington 700 Tactical. Heavy, 20 inch barrel with plenty of meat, for a nice shoulder. I dumped the Hogue stock and replaced it with a Magpul 700 Hunter stock. The barrel is freefloated, and it has an aluminum bedding block. I bedded it as well. I shoot an Innovative Arms LDSP, and the setup is perfect for me. Shoots 170 grain flat nose at 1030fps, and is quieter than my Gamo pellet gun. The rifle likes 150 gr Game Kings for full house loads.

No reason not to go 1/2x28 on a lighter profile barrel, then simply run an adapter. I have a .300 WSM Montana that's chopped and threaded 1/2x28 and I use the excellent Gemtech adapter... it works like a champ. Also, if you go1/2x28 + adapter... you can screw the can onto your .223 cal guns, as that's the standard thread pitch for .22 centerfires.

The minor diameter of a 1/2-28 thread is 0.456", which with a .308" bore means your barrel is going to have 0.074" walls, and a stress riser from the threads. Most barrel makers recommend a 0.125" wall thickness for barrels.

There's a good reason the 5/8-24 thread is used with the 30 caliber, as well as a reason 1/2-28 is not used.

If given the choice I would always prefer to use a 9/16" thread on .30 cal instead of 1/2"-28. Partly for muzzle wall thickness, and partly to make sure a 223 suppressor or brake doesn't get installed on it by accident. Seems dumb, but people also try to chamber 300 Blk in 223, which is equally dumb IMO. Some real thin barrels require 1/2"-28, but I personally won't do it in any other situation.

One of the 9/16" threads (-24 or -28) is good to go on any bore size up to at least 358, and will fit most hunting rifle barrel profiles. If you can go bigger, that is even better.

That was my thought as well. Kimber uses an even smaller thread diameter, the 7/16-28, on almost all their threaded barrels. Seems awfully thin to me but Kimber said they had no issues using that thread pitch with .30 cal barrels. They also said it was originally intended for muzzle brakes but could also be used with their adapter for suppressors. Still seems awfully thin. Will be intesesting to see how they hold up over time.

The can on the shorter barrel will give you some extra boost so you aren't losing that much over a longer barrel without the can. The shorter barrel will also balance better with the can on it.

Please explain your "extra boost" statement. Not knocking you just trying to understand.
