How does PPU 170gr .30-30 perform on game? My Marlin 336 loves this stuff and I'm finding it for $13-$14/box.

Thx

Some reports have it being a bit "hotter" than domestic stuff, causing issues with extraction in some Marlins. At least, that's what they say over on Marlinowners.com

I haven't tried it yet, but other posters over there say all it takes is keeping the chamber spotless to overcome the extraction issues.

I've got plenty of WW stuff that my 336SC likes, so I'm set for quite awhile.

BTW, it's sold at Academy under another name, Monarch, I think, so you might keep an eye out for it there, too.

My 336 loves the stuff too, but I haven't used it on game yet. It is loaded hotter than domestic producers, and I'd like to see an expanded bullet, but I'm a firm believer regardless. Besides, if you reload, the brass is superb.

Just about every PPU type of ammo is quite underloaded - except for the .30/30 I reckon.
I had some 150 grain PPU which I chronographed in my 20' inch carbine and it was an honest 2340fps. This was 150-200 fps faster than Winchester or Remington.

Maybe you can do test comparison shooting whatever standard load/bullet you like (Remington Core-Lokt/Winchester PowerPoint/Federal, etc.) vs the PPU into something like some phone books. Then see how they compare in penetration, expansion and retained weight. If the PPU compares favorably, it would seem likely it should fare well on game. Frankly though, one would think that a 170 gr 30-30 cup and core bullet should do well on game unless it were just ridiculously thin jacketed and super soft lead. And that also might be another sanity check you could do. Pull a few bullets and cut/section them to examine the jacket thickness and maybe do a hardness check of the lead and compare to a core-lokt or power point bullet. I only suggest all this because no one as of yet chimed in with experience on game performance. If all that seems too much trouble, I'd just go shoot a deer with it and find out that way.

I hunted with the 139 gr PPU 7MM-08 load last year and am using the same this year. I found it to be very adequate.

put a 170 where it belongs and the head stamp means nothing.

C'mon guys. It's a .30-30, and we're talking deer. Close your eyes and pick your ammo, it'll all kill. I tell newbies to go buy whatever is cheapest and go forth and kill stuff.

Thank you. Bought a bunch of PPU 5.56 years ago and only recently gotten around to shooting any of it I had ratholed. Good factory ammo, as far as I'm concerned, and decently accurate.

Just picked up several boxes of .30 cal for the M1 carbine in the final hours of the gun show at Miccosukee Indian casino today cheaper than anything online. No tax. No shipping. Cash is king.

No experience with the 30-30. Hope it shoots as well for you.
